shimming the relief valve is an old trick for increasing the oil pressure, but its generally frowned upon - be interested to hear if it makes an significant difference Mark

    Put it back in!!!

I found the same thing in my original ABY pump and was wondering if some mechanic placed it there. Searching I found part# 034 115 197 that I beleive corresponds to this washer, so I´m putting it back where it belongs!!! I also did see the family album picture, question now is which oil pumps use this and which don´t????

Thanks Dave, this isnt the sealing washer as they both have that, this one fits inside the pump over the end of the plug/sensor. I'm going to leave it out as i dont think it was an original Audi part, was just curious if anybody else had found one before.

That spacer is used for raising the spring force and that means the presure will be higher because presure relief will open at higher presure.

Problem is i cant find any mention of it in the parts diagrams, anybody know if its supposed to be there? Thanks, Mark.
I believe if you look at Illustration 115-30 in the family album, you will find that the plug is PN 069 115 431B (normally for the 5 cylinder AAR). The "spacer", I believe, is the "sealing washer", N 013 827 2. The PN for the oil temp sender (common to the AAN, ABY and ADU)

Here is photo of an "exploded" oil pump:
