ABY Coupe/Avant fuel pump basket part No

    Hi,
I recently converted my 1990 2.3 E Coupe Quattro to ABY engine from an Avant.

I need to repace the Fuel Pump with the ABY unit to supply the correct amount/pressure of fuel.

I am thinking of buying a new pump as the nearly new one from the Avant is different to a coupe, (longer pipe with female screw fitting on the end rather than male)

But I dont know if an ABY S2 Coupe Pump will fit in the 2.3NG Basket/Pump holder thing.

Can anybody check if the baskets are the same between an NG and an ABY, if not, are the baskets from an ABY avant and ABY coupe the same?

In fact are the pumps from the Avant/Coupe ABY the same and its just the pipe that is different, if so, do you have the part number for the pipe.

Sorry if this is confusing. PLEASE HELP. I want to sort this ASAP

This isn't trivial to explain as there are different basket sizes with different pumps that all fit the B3 Coupe tank.

You could take ABY stuff or alternatively use a higher spec Bosch 044 pump using a modified basket. This gives you more headroom on the fuel supply department than ABY or RS2 pumps. Worth investigation if you aint bought an ABY pump yet.

Will dig up some useful diagrams and part nums over lunch for you... Just about to order some baskets & stuff for Bosch pump myself - so most info is close to hand

For the Bosch 044 pump install you need the following to work with ABY fuel pipe - dunno if you have that installed yet, but its different to NG in how it routes to the filter - no fuel pressure accumulator on the ABY of course.

      895 201 779 H Reservoir 1 £22.48
      895 201 531 A Strainer 1 £20.63

      N 013 812 8 Sealing Washers 2 £0.19

Clear as mud, definately, So do i need more than just the pump and basket from an ABY coupe??

I dont have the budget to fork out for the 044 pump just yet im afraid otherwise i'd definatley do that.

Sent Sal a PM earlier this morning, hopefully he will have all the bits i need

Didnt know the ABY had no pressure damper, any idea how to remove it as i cant see what the ABY uses in the parts diagram?

I thought the 044 pump used the 895201779J reservoir, or is it a different physical size to the original pump

              Cheers,

Paul thanks for all the info, i can see that a pipe clearly bypasses the accumulator, which i will need.

Also the basket and strainer you speak of above for the 044 pump is the same as for and NG is that correct, i already have these parts??

You need to modify the NG strainer/basket for the 044 pump and build them up together on bench...

I would just get a new strainer for it.

Its not so much a pressure damper as a pressure accumulator - needed on Bosch K and KE Jetronic engines to ensure there is sufficient fuel pressure when cranking the engine... There is a failsafe feature on Jetronic to shutoff fuel pump when the engine stops - otherwise continuous fuel flow as result of accident damage for example

Oh there is a pressure damper on the pump itself - yes that gets replaced with the domed nut referenced above.
The 044 pump is ~60mm wide which is why it works with NG strainer.

The ABY and many other pumps ar ~43mm diameter and use a different strainer.

                    Capiche ?????

Hmm, the words 'can' and 'worms' spring to mind. I took a look at the 044 pump fitting guide and my basket looks nothing like the one in the guide. as my pump is very long and thin, not short and fat like the 044 one, i cant see how my NG basket would work. In fact, i wouldnt be surprised if my pump and basket wasnt from an NG at all. I think my best bet at the moment is to wait for sal to get back to me and pillage all the parts that i need from an ABY coupe. and get it all working. :mischeif:

Thanks for all the advice paul, the ETKA stuff is much clearer than VAGCAT. I didn't realise i had an accumulator that i will no longer need, im glad i know that now. Its fairly clear what i need to do now.
Then when the car is running nicely with ABY pump etc. I will have a play with my old basket and 044 pump. then i can simply swap it out when im happy.
Need the car ready for MOT next week and Nurburgring trip on the 14th.
