    HELP... just put my finger through the MAF and killed it....

    was taking the airbox off my s2 avant earlier to check the K&N airfilter element, and while putting it all back together i managed to put my finger through the little wire on in the MAF and snapped the wire!!!

    I put it all back and the car runs, a bit lumpy, and i thought well thats FUBAR now so took it off and put on the one off my VR6 golf, which essencially is the same (well same shape)

    It runs, well as it should I guess, infact it actually felt much quicker, and I do mean "MUCH" quicker, which makes me think that its not doing my engine any good!

    Can anyone help me, I need to know what the MAF ive put on there is doing to my engine and if its ok, or if i need a new MAF

    the number on the origional MAF;
    272 01 1A
    0 280 213 007
    034 133 471 K

    and the numbers on the VR6 one are;
    264 07 2A
    0 280 213 021
    021 906 461

    any of this mean anything to anyone???

    help muchly appreciated.

    cheers,
    Keith

    You need a new MAF.

          Let me guess, you had previously removed the screens because they "just weren't needed".

          Reasons why the factory installed the metal screens

              I've removed the screens but then I've got a spare MAF from Slovenia and they're the best ones

                In what way will a mesh stop turbulent flow over the wire? If it was a series of tubes or a long grid like the RS2 MAF then we're getting somewhere but a mesh... er, no. The tube around the wire does that job.

                I've removed both meshes on mine as they're a small restriction but it all adds up. All runs tickedy-boo

                  Try this experiment: Run some tap water through a kitchen collander or a strainer. Observe the water coming out the bottom.

                  Then think air flow throught the MAF.

                    There is also a plastic kind of net in the airfilter box to prevent turbulens, i'm told that you should even keep that if you put a conefilter.

                      I hardly think that an experiment using a much denser liquid, a completely different mesh with effectively a reservior of water from the restriction of the collinder and gravity tells me anything about the flow of a gas through the mesh in question, neither do I agree that the open mesh is effective in the purpose of inucing lamina flow. I'm sure that if you pour the liquid onto a representitve mesh then you would not see the collinder effect... the mesh is there for protection and not much elso IMO.

                          i've just been playing with a seive and a collinder in the sink and i agree with Andy

                            Sorry, my bad. I guess I was confused by teaching fluid mechanics for 11 years at a University.

                            Duh.

                            Oh, yeah, the world is ROUND.

                            But then again, you might not believe that one either.
