cam belt walks toward engine. any ideas

    HI

i have recently done rods, skimmed pistons, new oil and water pump, tensioner and 7a cam.

when i refit the cam belt it all looks ok but the belt walks around 5-8mm towards the engine making the belt hit the casing.

obviously it should not walk. i have checked everything. the only thing i think i have issues with is the new oil pump thats made in korea rather than Germany. its a VAG item too.

can anybody help. is there a spacer behind the crank pully i have lost? it looks like a crank pully allignment type issue to me.

    cheers in advance.

Can't say i've seen this as the crank pulley is shaped to retain the belt with a flared end.

Be interesting to see the part number if you have it?

          i dont remember removing it.

the only bit i remember is the oil pump drive.

but the belt is off and the pulley looks like its sat too far in.

Have you check crank end float?

Dial gauge on end of crank - lever behind / push down on the flywheel. Record the deflection.

                      .

If you have 3mm of end float you forgot the thrust washers...

Really dont think so, should be about 4 thou i think.

You can only measure it with a dial gauge and the engine out.

Sorry - Just realised that you probably have the engine in the car with the clutch fitted.

If the engine is in the car you could check it with some one pressing the clutch in and out whilst you are watching the front pulley and see if it moves, also you could use a lever on the front pulley ond then on the flywheel and see if there is movement, from memory it should be 12 or 15 thou max movement (dont quote me though, i am away on holidays) Please note that a few thou might look a lot more to the naked eye so dont panic.

I have no part number for it, but i did the same when i changed the crank pulley, the washer was still in the old one, i pulled it apart again and put the washer behind the new one and all is perfect again.

But it seems that other lads know of the washer too, not just me.

I might be wrong but this washer is only fitted to the later engines like the ABY?
