    Intercooler stock alternative

    Hello.

So.. have made leak test and find out that all power gets lost by IC in witch the cranks pulley has drilled a "nice" hole.

First question - why this happend? Could this be a couse of engine mountings? Or by sometihng else..

The second question - where could I buy a new IC that +/- will fit and could stand as an alternative for stock IC? Looking for something not very expensive.

If the mounting brackets are worn or bent then this can happen.

ABY or 3B? Secondhand ones come up on here and are your cheapest option.

Check you engine mounts and also install an uprated snub mount which will reduce engine movement. Buy a used IC it will cost £40-50

3B or ABY? I just had to use my spare ABY one as i battered the IC when i was in a field starting the digger cause some idiot left the key on! Exact same problem, the IC was pushed into the pulley. Check the IC mounting are not bent.

I do have a spare 3B one somewhere tho.

              Mine too

I've found the exact same damage on my IC when having a look from below this last weekend.
There's some damage to the lower bumper so it looks like the IC has been pushed back into the engine at some point although I suspect more damage has then been done by the engine jumping around during exuberant driving as I'm sure the car had waay more power/boost in the first couple of weeks I owned it.

Out of interest how much clearance should there be from the lower pulley to the intercooler? Mine has only about a 10 - 15mm gap.

Also is it worth trying to get a hole in the IC repaired?

It is possible to repair the IC, but mine is too damadged to repair it.

Thanks to user nip, seems like I will hava a new IC without extra unwanted holes next week

Just make sure it's secure so that this doesn't happen again

I pressure tested my intercooler (from IC inlet to start of rigid hose on top of engine) and it holds pressure fine despite the damage to the back of it. Also tightened all the hose clamps I could easily reach and it seems to have made a difference. ...

As Jamo said earlier, this is more often than not caused by worn engine mounts, couple this with spirited driving and you have a front pulley shaper half moon hole in your IC, as suggested, make sure they (and the snub) are good, because regardless how well the IC is fixed, the engine will still make a mess of it...!
