hey guys just wondering how much boost and bhp i could run on standard pistons? does anyone know a safe skimming depth ie to the bottom of the valve pocket to make a flush flat crown?
how much power on standard pistons

Standard pistons can take high bhp, the reason most people change them is to either change the compression ratio or for overbore reasons.
I would suggest a compression ratio dropping gasket if you run them though.
See a thread by Audiman re skimming the pistons flat, he and 4wheeldrifter have done this with some success apparently this was also done by dialynx on their hill climb car. -
Is there any reason that this is in For Sale/Trade?1994 Audi S2 Avant - in pieces
2006 Skoda Octavia vRS 2.0TFSi - goes fast
1985 Audi 90 quattro - is wet

How does the weight of standard pistons compare to the bling bling forged ones? Are OE pistons also forged? If aftermarket pistons (like the forged rods) are lighter then there is an advantage to be had there.Cheers'en, AndyC

even though im going for the 500 + mark im still sticking with the standard piston for now. not only because it saves boring the block but also for the classic forged piston reasons ie slap/wall clearance. i want my car as an everyday car still.
i had around 1mm taken off the piston. had them balanced and the scats weight matched and balanced also.Comment

Many aftermarket pistons are a downgrade from OE Mahles. Weak link on oe pistons is the wrist pin.
Nevertheless, oe pistons take 600hp and 700Nm quite happily, even with stock C/R and wrist pins.Everything less than 2 bar is considered to be naturally aspiratedComment

stock are kolben schmidt.
Mahle makes the optional ones of 81.29 and 81.51.
i have a friend in greece who ran the stock intrnals with GT35 turbo, and without problems up to 1.5bar for 500whp.BUT the spool was after 5500rpm which meant that the strain was less for the pistons/rods as the engine had already built a momentumLast edited by A80Avant; 15 August 2008, 18:08.Comment

yeh i done some research and kolben schmidt and mahle are both connected as companies, also checked at work today if aby aan 3b rr pistons are different and all come up the same part number, all genuine parts are well manufactured in which makes me want to stick by them, my concerns were if i skim the crown it will take less heat to melt, i dont plan on going too far over 500 so what do you guys think?Comment

right, kolben schmidt,!
To be honest,i have seen on the german ebay some kolben schmidt larger diameter pistons as well.
I bought my mahle pistons from Peter Kowalsh in germany (PK motorsport) and he said that although they are not 100% forged, but good quality cast pistons, they have been tested on varius S2 he has built reaching 670hp crank without any problems.
So that coming from him, convinced me. I didnt want the forged pistons because you end up getting some oil burnet if the block is not honed properly and i have also been told that although tougher, they tend be more harsh towards the cylinders, requireing honing sooner.
With these i practically have zero oil consumption(like 300ml on 5000Kms or something) which is nice!

Geez already told you Dialynx and Audiman have done thisyeh i done some research and kolben schmidt and mahle are both connected as companies, also checked at work today if aby aan 3b rr pistons are different and all come up the same part number, all genuine parts are well manufactured in which makes me want to stick by them, my concerns were if i skim the crown it will take less heat to melt, i dont plan on going too far over 500 so what do you guys think?
