Smoke durning long hot idle, (new everything)

Well as the title says, after a few 100 miles after an engine rebuild, new turbo, new pcv system, it just started to smoke alot on idle whilst stuck in traffic. I pulled off the Mway and now I'm at my flat thinking do i drive it home?

The oil level isnt too high, its not running hot, though I do have a bit of a lumpy idle and had a fault code this morning which hasnt reared its head again. (it was 2221, the 3b one for manifold pressure)

I've read the threads about possible turbo lines, badly recon turbo etc etc but it seems no one ever posted if they resolved the problem.

I'm a little more than angry I would say I'm apoplectic, too much money spent and still these things happen, I'm about ready to throw in the towel, cut my loses (for what Ive spent I could have a modern high performance car)

Anyway anyone with any ideas? ps the valve stem oil seals are new, the oil lines are new infact most things are new.

Just because the valve stems are new don't rule them out. Mark Halligan had a issue with new valve stems melting. He has a thread on here.

you may have a syl test, for the blow by.... or the turbo has gone bad.. look in the cooler, have this item out of the car , and se if there are some oil on it...... if NOT,, the 3. syl piston may cracked...(you will see some different color on the sparks.... if so)

Yeap new guides and seals, was a complete ovehaul, hmm, could be blow by i will comp test when i get home tommorow, hope it isnt the turbo, but then again if it is might just get a hybrid or rs2 unit. Anwway I hope it doesnt take too long to diagnose, I'm really running out of love for this car. After 5 years of ownership I have never had a trouble free week, and really only driven it about 9 months out of the 5 years due to problems, rebuilds etc.

              I have this on mine,

Hot engine, fan kicks in, smoke out the back, gutted!!!

However (good news) is that is not as drastic as may look!!

When upgrading a catch tank will sort this out but in the mean time, replace the Pressure regulating valve £8.00 this and you should be OK.

Have one to put in myself this weekend so will let you know!

              Hope that helps!

The think is all the valves in pcv system are new, it hasnt done it since but was idling in traffic for a long time. It's just embaressing when your stuck in traffic.

Got to spend today finding a water leak before work again tommorow, and fixing the catch on the passenger door!

Will see if it happens again, but i havent got the will power at the moment to hunt out this problem.

I have just fixed my car burnt oil too.As your situation that's closed to mine.I also replaced 2 valves on the PCV system,Valve stem seals etc.
finally,I got my 3rd spared K24 on the car.Now It's fixed. You'd better check on your turbo again.trust me ,it's worth.

                    Hi there

I know this is an old thread, but I've scoured the forum for similar - not much luck.
My RS2, when hot and at idle, emits white smoke. When you pull off, the idle's a bit lumpy, but eventually settles down to normal ish idle.
Also, it seems to be over fuelling - rich fuel smell as well as a slight misfire.
The shop that maintains it, reckons this could be the following:
Fuel pressure regulator - misfire, overfuelling and possibly smoke
Water pump - smoke which requires change of all belts and tensioner

Question is: unless I'm wrong, the water pump could be a result of leaking water - and this isn't the case cause I haven't topped up the water. Should I just attend to the regulator and see if the problem persists? Could it be something else?

Would really appreciate some insight on this.

                    Cheers
