Which one? Power steering belt, Air con belt or Alternator belt. The S2 has an electric fan. Alternator and PS belt are quick, AC is a bit more than 2 minutes.

alternator belt - thanks. I'll speak to the father in law then - cars aren't my specialty. But means I don't need to book it in.
Having said that, he nearly passes out every time he lifts my bonnet - he gave up mechanicing 30 years ago when things were a lot simpler.

Well as things go on the S2 this one is easy.

See the attached pic, undo the locking nut (no.1) and adjust the larger adjuster nut (no.2) and retighten nut whilst holding the desired belt tension on nut no. 2 with a spanner.

        One minute tops!!

        Cheers,

        Mark.

magic - this one really is straightforward. nothing else we have done has been - the S2 seems to have a way of making the simple tasks rather more complicated. thanks for the help.

That job *can* be easy - but its a right bee-atch if some previous turkey has damaged that bolt before you. Had this on someone else car and it took a lot longer than 2 minutes to get sufficient tension on the ALT belt cos there was teeth missing from the tensioner !

I have seen broken teeth on these a lot as well - this is caused by you not loosening the 2 bolts (or long bolt and nut) where it pivots - just loosen them before you adjust it and tighten them up after.

You should probably loosen the nut the adjuster arm sits on as well before you move it.

Approx what tension should the belt be at?

                Thanks

most of the drive belts, you should not be able to twist the belt through more than 90 degrees at the centre point of the longest run of the belt. I.E where the most amount of 'give' would be. So grab a belt in the middle of its longest run, twist it, turns more than 90 degrees? its too loose!

The alternator adjuster with the teeth is 034 903 555B and at £1.90+vat, might as well change it every time you do the belt..
