    Coolant Leak

Hi chaps, after getting my thermostat changed and fitting a new oil cooler my car has sprung another leak. This time my mechanic friend reckons its the core plug on the engine thats located behind the gearbox. Anybody heard of that...

    cheers

It could possibly be the hoses at the rear that go up to the heater matrix. Never heard of a core plug going, but have read of a leak from those hoses right down the back of the engine. Try a search of posts by user "Graham" on this.

      coolant leak

Cheers i'll try that. 1st the thermostat stuck closed and water was leaking out of the expansion tank, at the same time i blew the oil cooler. My mechanic is ex head mechanic at vag and he said that the core plug in that location tends to perish every now and again. Gearbox out job i'm afraid...

To be honest I'd be checking hoses before gearbox out on a hunch of a core plug!

If the stat was change my betting he disturbed the turbo water line little hose ( if it's an S2 ) and the little ****** could be leaking.

Here the post by Graham I remember reading ►►► Linky
I might be way off though. Just thinking if it bends round the back of the block there, then leaks down between the block and the gearbox, it could give the impression it's coming from elsewhere.
          Worth a look.

As far as i am aware there is no core plugs on the back of the block, even though i have had a core plug failure down the side of the block under the manifold. There is 5 down there (One with the turbo water pipe soldered into it). PITA to get to in situ but not impossible.

Hi folks, thanks for the replies. Hopefully it will be something simple and easy to fix. I'm going to have a read through of some previous members problems (thanks for the link Jas11n), i'll let you know how i get on.
