    timing with engine out.

I have an ABY engine on my garage floor destined for my 85 quattro. Seemed a good idea to change the cam belt and tensioner while everything is accessible. Problem is, the pulleys have moved slightly in the process and without the gearbox attached I have no bell housing reference to the timing mark on the flywheel. Anyone know of other accurate timing marks I can use to set the crank with the engine out.

    Thanks.

The front pulley has a timing mark on it.

Given the engine will need the front apron & lock carrier to be removed for fitment in its new home, then you may as well wait until its bolted onto the gearbox - I'm not aware of any other marks that you can trust with any degree of accuracy.

The front pulley does have a mark alright - but its alignment to a tag on the block is not accurate IMO.

Take cylinder 1's spark plug out and put a stick down the hole. Turn the crank until it's at TDC.

            Hmmmm...

TDC... on compression or is that exhaust?

Need to be very careful with the old stick down the chamber routine - I always find it hard to see/feel when accurately at TDC - but actually as long as the camshaft position can be trusted then its easy enough to line up TDC on #1 with those marks on the cam pulley...

If the existing position of the belt/pulley cannot be trusted I would be tempted to remove the head for proper internal inspection then set the engine to TDC so that a paint blob or whatever can be made on the block wrt position of reference pin on the flywheel (62 BTDC)

Glad this question came up then, so set to TDC from piston 1 is the only other method?

I'll do this on my block tomorrow cheers

                  Jamo - 62 degrees is 23.25 flywheel teeth. Derived from 62 / (360/135)

EXACTLY! I have changed the timing belt with the engine out and no tranny. Just be sure to be on the timing mark in the crank pulley and in the cam pulley
