    ABY wont start. Help.

My S2 has been off the road for around 8-9 weeks while I've fitted some new Samco hoses and had the ECU Homefried. I've got everything back together today finally and I've come to try and start it but it wont.

It cranks over fast enough but doesn't even try to fire, after around 10 seconds of cranking, the red oil light flashes up on the screen and beeps 3 times. Oil pressure under cranking is just over 3 bar, and the oil level is on the maximum. I haven't carried on cranking past this alarm, just in case its telling me something serious is indeed wrong.

Does something need reset after the ECU being removed and put back in? Or could it be something more terminal? The only other thing I can think of, is I tried to take the top cover off the spark plugs, I was going to give it a coat of paint to tidy it up a bit, but I didn't realise the coil packs were in there and still connected, so I just put it back on, could I have possibly disturbed something and its not getting any spark?

    Thanks,

    Mark

You are going to have to check for fuel pressure and spark. It could be the fuel pump or the cam position sensor (hall sender) (there are codes for the Hall Sender but none for the fuel pump). It could also be the FP relay since it controls a lot of things.

You could try these diagnostic procedures:

Fuel pump testing procedure for an AAN (may need adaptation for an ABY or 3B car)

Missing or hesitation (AAN related but should work for an ABY too)

Info on the Fuel Pump relay

I've just been out and had a look at the relay for the electric fuel pump (208) in the fusebox where diagnostic port is. Tried to remove it but actually pulled the top off it and caught the er....innards of the relay. Every time I did that, it made a connection and a small pump could be heard somewhere next to the engine. I presume there's another for in the tank?

I've also checked the obvious, there is fuel in it and it isn't dumping it all over the driveway. Gotta start somewhere I suppose.

All sorted now. Turned out that the ECU wasn't plugged in quite right.....thankfully. What a sod of a job that is.

The ECU harness connector does have an over-centre/cam type clip that you do have to press all the way so it snaps shut and prevents the connector from coming loose from the ECU. (It's the silver bit in the upper left corner of this photo

That silver clip wasn't the problem, the connector itself has a small plastic lug on it that needs to locate into a small hole on the ECU, as you're lying upside-down in the footwell and cant see what you're doing, I didn't realise this was causing the problem. Everytime I tried to clip the silver thing shut, the connector simply fell out again. Very annoying.

Yup, it sure does. All part of the system that keeps the ECU plug attached to the ECU.

Although it is annoying, at least you figured the problem out and the cost was minimal.
