    How to test coilpacks....?

    Guys...
Is it easy to check the resistance of my coilpacks, got a feeling one or more are playing up as I have a slight on boost misfire.

I have a pretty decent DMM, is it easy to do?

    Cheers

Just tested them by laying a piece of (clean!) earthed box section on a piece of wood parrallel to the plugs and turned the engine over (unplugged injectors)

I read on here that it is one way of testing them.

Number one - nearest the bulkhead seemed a little weaker than the rest after moving the metal about 10mm away. At 15mm it would not jump at all, where the rest would - just!

Tried different boots and plugs on number one, but was still the same.

Although a little crude...is this pointing at a failing coilpack on No 1...?

Thats as good a bench test as any James without some really sensitive measuring gear... www.sjmautotechnik.com contains details on this - it needs a meter that can measure conductance (1/resistance)...

If you have one sick coil pack, I personally dont think its worth changing it by itself... I know the price pain, but renewing all five at once and keeping others as emergency spares is the path of least pain and confusion.

Have you tested the HT boots already ?

I cured lots of misfires on mine cos of crappy/oily boots - I'm due to change the coilpacks but the new boots greatly improved things.

Worth swapping the POS cables in pairs to see if the problem spark moves

            Thanks for the replies guys...

@ Paul. - Was thinking the same, if one goes, then the other 4 are probably not far behind. Will live with it for a couple of weeks then shell out for all 5.

@ Paul/martinjs - The problem is that I have no misfire at idle, only on 1.45 bar boost, changed one of the POS about 2 months ago as was running on 4 cylinders most of the time. Now when you ask it I get a slight hesitation/misfire, then clears itself as the boost drops below 1.2 bar.

Is there any way of testing the HT boots?
Although I am pretty sure coilpack 1 is on its last legs...

            Cheers

Sorry dudes, just re-read your thoughts....will try the SAME test with the earthed metal surface and swap POS leads to see if the weak spark moves....

When this happens in the UrS4/S6 world (AAN) I point them to this procedure:

This was the same method used when one of my POS packed up a few months ago....was on 4 ALL the time so checked the POS as per instructions in the link you mentioned above and problem cured.

Could it be that the other is on the way out?...If it is, its nothing like the symptoms of my POS a while ago, it only misses slightly at high boost, do POS fail in this way? or is it likely to be my weak spark from no1 coilpack.

                  James

ps, will do the same "bench test" tonight and swap POS to see if the weak spark moves

Missing at high boost is most likely to be caused by a weak coil than a dieing POS (but it is possible). I would focus on the weak No.1 coil for now.

As a matter of interest, the brown Hitachi "351" POS from the 2.8L V6s will work (as a spare) on an AAN or ABY. Cheap as chips at a breakers. (keep one in the car as a spare). Check this out:

                      Cheers Urs4boy....

I have a spare brown coil, will try it this weekend. Not sure if it would work on an ABY, but you have just answered the question.

                      Thanks buddy
