    RS2 - 10-40w vs 15-50w

    Hi Guys,

I've had a good read of 'the definitive oil thread' and there are suggestions of running Mobil 1 15-50W Motorsport or Motul V300 5-40w for example. Also on this thread it suggests that 10-40W synthetic is the correct oil to go for and fit for the job.

My RS2 has 105k on the clock. It sees UK road use only, although a winter track day at Silverstone might be of interest! Currently it has VAG Syntax Gold 10-40W oil. The tappets are a little bit noisy and there has been a little oil consumption, but nothing to worry about.

Lastly I plan to order a standard Audi oil filter for the service...is this the best thing to do?!

    Many thanks,

Standard filter is fine and make sure your replace the sump plug and copper o' ring too, If these are reused it can course problems when you try to remove them next time round as the edges of the nut gets stressed and can round off.

As for oil, many people on here favor the Silkolene Pro S 10w-50 that can be purchased from Opie oils in Cornwall.

    Cheers.

I have Synta gold in, and it seems fine. There's a bit of consumption, but I can only hear the tappets when the level gets low.

i still use 10W60 which i had from greece,as it seems to be working better during the summer there, but up here,i have he oil barely reaching less than 2bar on idlle due to colder weather,so i may be trying the 10W50 myself next oil change

Many thanks for your help. Opie have suggested that the Silkolene Pro S 5-40w will offer me good cold start protection and that as my car is not modified, and as I am not using it on the track, that I wouldnt need to go to 10-50w.

They added that the Syntax Gold (VAG) which is in there at the moment isnt actually a fully synthetic oil which might explain why its turned very black after 6 months and 4,000 miles.

As to the tappet noise I was advised try the SPS 5-40 first as this is a better oil than the one I've been using and may well quieten things down.

          Cheers,
