    034 Coil on plugs

Just when I thought I had finally sorted out the small isues with the S2 it started to misfire badly last night, it was strange as it was fine driving to my mates but then as soon as I started it when I left it was running on 4

I got some plugs for it today and a customer of mine who runs a VW garage sorted me out with a new coil on plug to try when I got in from work. As soon as I got in from work I fired the car p to go to the workshop and to my suprise it was running fine, typically this only lasted a few miles and the constant misfire came back, checks showed number 4 wasn't sparking so I replaced all the plugs and fitted the vw coil and we were back in business, now this is the strange bit :

The car was now running better than ever and to be fair I was considering changing all the coils as there was noticably better response from the engine and a much nicer idle, ofcourse in true S2 fashion another problem appeared whilst I was chatting to a mate and I'd left the car idling it just randomly cut out, I restarted it and it was fine but then whilst driving home it cut out as I slowed to turn a corner then done the same again pulling onto my drive

What coils does the 034 setup use, are the passat coil on plugs ok to use or is there and known issues with using them ? it was a genuine VAG part and it would appear the ones used were not genuine coils or atleast weren't marked. It might have nothing to do with the coil but I can't see what else it could be, the ignition barrel is iffy but there is no way I touched it and all 3 times its stalled i've been off the throttle but its too sudden to be idle control or similar, it literally cuts out.

034 doesn't sell that 1.8t coil pack "kit" anymore. They had lots of problems with the 1.8t coil packs failing. When I did the DIY in Sept. 05 (well in advance of 034 coming out with their kit in April 2006, I recommended at least the 115L coils (the latest at that point, there are 115 R coils now). I am not sure what 034 used because they removed the part numbers from the coil packs. (Why? Don't know - but I could guess).

One thing you need to check is whether the coils have been trimmed properly to snap down on the spark plugs. If either the rubber sealing rings or the hard plastic bit have not been trimmed properly, the coil packs will not sit down far enough and snap onto the metal hex of the spark plugs.

Have a look at the original DIY to see what I am talking about (follow the link in this link):

Apikol still sells the 1.8t coil pack kit and are known to use the latest 115 coil packs.

Thanks for your reply, I did trim the coilpack but I will check it and whilst I'm doing that I'll replace the other 4 coils (Once I have checked that the one I already replaced is the latest type)

I finally got vagcom working on it tonight and it kept showing up a cps fault, as well as this cutting out I also get a almighty single misfire on full throttle occasionally, twice when it occured I had my eye on the boost guage and once was below a bar and the other time it was nearer 1.2 so I don't think its boost cut, I do feel these could be caused by the cps though.

Common fault to see on vagcom, or is it likely to be a faulty cps ?
