Knocking noise coming from engine

Hello,

My RS2 has been playing up a bit lately. Its slowly losing water and also the engine has started making quite a loud knocking noise.

At first i though it was coming from the gearbox bellhousing but i think its actually coming from the rear top of the engine.

I have taken this video you can clearly hear the knocking noise on it which increases with the reves. This has been happening for about 2 weeks but i think it might be getting louder.

The water leak seams to be coming from the front of the engine. Maybe its the water feed for the turbo.
Also i found a bit of milky residue on the inside of the oil cap, Is it possible for the RS2 metal head gasket to blow?
Compression is not down as its still boosting very hard .

Ohh and the oil level is pretty much spot on too so i dont think its the tappets.

Clean the cap and then re-check in a bit. Losing water and milky doesn't sound great. Just trying to get your vid the now.

Doesn't sound so good mate. No loss of compression though.. hmm. Can't help but water loss + oil cap points to water getting in where it shouldn't, hopefully not weeping into a cylinder.

When its been left over night take the plugs out and shine a torch down to look for zee water.
Does the noise stay the same hot or cold?
My knocking was the oil pump:

Take the belts off first. pas can make similar noise.

Difficult to diagnose on the video but IMO that sounds really unhealthy mate . If it's not manifold or pump related then I think it's going to be head-off time and start wobbling some pistons, not heard a noise like that just from a weak or gone HG but that's not asying much . Surely you've got a few RS2 engines lying about, or if you haven't then Stu certainly will Just Whip the head off and have a look if there's nothing obvious... 'just'

Almost forgot, a touch of WD40 on the belts shuts them up, worked a treat diagnosing a bad noise on mine.

My guess is rod knock, ie. a busted rod bearing.
It usually sounds like it comes from the head. Had the same thing on my Golf. Replaced them in an afternoon, and it has been golden ever since.

You can replace the rod bearings w/o pulling the engine. Remove oil pan and slide new bearings into place. Might be wise to plastigauge the mains, but they take a lot of abuse, mine were still within new spec after 240K (kms)
Don't drive the car as it is now, or a rod might pop out to say hi.

Deffinatly sounds engine related. Rythmical, and increases/ decreases with engine speed. Like has been said clean the cap off then take it for a drive, make sure it fully heats up and have another look at the cap. Also worth holding your hand over the oil filler hole to feel if there is much air being forced out.

On second thought, it might not sound as harsh as rod knock. Exhaust leak in another possibility. Check manifold for cracks.
Also make sure nothing is rubbing on the pulleys. Almost sounds like a plastic cover touching pulley teeth.

I dont want to scare you...but sounds like a piston or rod bearing. You can try to disconect 1 spark at the time and check iff the noise disapiers...iff yes..is a piston slap.

Check the spark plugs incase one has worked loose. Unfortunately it does sound like a head gasket or rod bearing
