    ARGHH... she won't start today!

Good News is I got a free ride in a truck today...

Bad News is so did my S2 ABY....

Scraped some ice off the windscreen, jumped in and ... she won't start this morning !!!!....

Battery pretty strong and turning her over, but just not catching at all.. The nice AA man looked rather confused under the bonnet and admitted it was all a bit more complicated looking than yer average Fiesta. He thinks no spark happening, so probably a sensor has failed...

    Any thoughts??

Was driving wonderfully yesterday.. now stuck in my wonderful local garage so they can check her over.

ps hey at least the tow to the garage improved the fuel consumption, which now shows n average of 26mpg !!! (since reset at refuelling last week) Best ever!

Either the cam or crank hall senders. Could be dodgy plug at the back of the engine bay, I've got one of these I find that if you check the plugs over, disconnect them and use a little WD40 in case there's some water in there, re-connect everything... it usually starts up. If it doesn't fire after a couple of cranks then it ain't going to IME.

CMP Sensor. Pour water down the back of the cambelt. Hey presto one working S2!

I has happened to me once. And since the water trick, never again. (Touch wood)

      Cheers,

      Steve.

Based on my experience, it could be one of two things:

        1. Cam Position Sensor (G40 Hall sender) behind the cam belt. If it fails, the ECU will not fire the fuel pump relay and therefore, no fuel pump, no start. This sensor will often but not always throw a CEL before it dies (Blink code 2113).

Have a look at this (and click on the G40 hyperlink):

        http://forums.audiworld.com/s4s6/msgs/222453.phtml

        2. Fuel pump. I had a fuel pump die very similarly. The car (93 S4) had about 160,000 km on it and it was hard to start one day (just a few seconds longer than normal). The next day it started fine and I drove off, took a ferry, and went to a public meeting that ended at 10:30 PM. It was fall and there was frost on the windshield when I went to start the car. Cranked like a damn but zippo. I was staying in that town for the night anyway. No change in the morning. The car had to be flat decked to the local Audi Porsche dealership where I was financially "raped". Very ugly. Now I promote fuel pump replacement at 160,000 km or 100,000 as a pre-emptive maintenance.

To test the FP for function, you can jump the relay by providing power from the + battery terminal to the downstream side of the fuel pump fuse. Here is the procedure for an AAN (similar for an ADY):

Good luck. (And don't bend over).

          Thanks to you both.

I lifted the rear seats and the AA guy said he could hear the fuel pump start up. Tho' I have heard a whining sound a lot from under the seat, which somone once suggested could be the fuel pump on its way out. Hmmm

I'll drop those notes into the guys at the garage.. they're very good, but I'm sure would appreciate help given the non-standard nature of the S2.

Let you know what comes up.

You can interrupt the hall senders wiring at the plugs to see if it is giving a pulse. Did this on mine and diagnosed the crank sensor as the fault, it's the plug though, not the sensor as it works fine witrh a little wiggle
