    Single front mounted radiator?

    Hi guys,

I see a few photo's floating around with S2's with single front radiators, just wondering if anyone here has done it and can point me to what vehicle has a similarly shaped radiator that will fit (with a bit of massaging if need be)

The S2 I baught in parts is missing both stock radiators as well as the fact im using an AAN intake manifold that has the throttle body slap bang where the larger side mount stock unit would have sat.

I hope to be able to fit a 50mm core radiator slim line fan and a 500X200 intercooler between the front of the engine and the modified bumper that came on the car...

    Thanks

I've not seen that done, single rad in the OE position but twisted I've seen or rad in teh boot but not front mount. Should be interesting as it's danbed toight down there... Moving the IC forward will help a lot, must be a pretty modded bumper you have?

Yes, it sits out enough that the intercooler will be able to sit totaly in front of the head lights which gives me the whole area under the front cross member, I just hope i can fit the fans in, other option is custom 50mm thick unit in stock location at an angle.. seen a picture of this as well,

In front of the IC? Surely not... that'll drag warm air through the IC when you want cool air...

No no, the intercooler will sit infront of the head lights, IE right forward and out of the way of having a radiator behind it

its more likey to be a large oil cooler behind the IC and then the rad will be in the boot. Andy is spot on.

? I am asking who has put a single front mounted raditor into their S2, My car doesnt actualy have a radiator AT ALL ANYWHERE, I would rather fit one decent sized front mount than try work around fitting a cocked side mount to clear the AAN manifold just tyring to find out who has done it before.

If you can get the cooling from the side mount, having the weight further back is clearly advantageous ...would much prefer to do that IMHO.

(Not in the boot though ...the airflow to the boot is a bit awkward)

For sure, maybe I must just look at having a serious custom side mount radiator built then,

You can go for the same height and width as OE and then go deeper with a permanent fan on the back. I've hardwired my ABY fan so I can have it on hi or ultra high speeds if I'm on track or in traffic and the temperature is a little higher than you'd like.

If you redesigned the XM then you could have a rad that sat where the aux rad sits and then drops down to where the IC sits now, you could then run a charge cooler in the place of the OE rad position but not an IC, I just don't see there's enough air there. The V6 has a front mount rad (biggun) so might fit although the I5 is longer than the V6.

Interesting thread to think of alternatives though...

Charge cooler actualy isnt a bad idea, i have one off my old 500kw drag car, maybe a similar setup to the new golf 2.0 Tsi VW's that use dual radiators and the second unit feeds into a in manifold air/water cooler and the slightly warmed coolant then runs back into the main cooling system.. I will be running water/meth injection anyways so not having a system as efficient temprature wise as a FMIC isnt that much of an issue.

charge cooler is what gnutz is running iirc.

I've not seen any front mounted rads due to space, tbh just as easy to put a huge intercooler at the front then do what was mentioned above and get a smaller in height rad from a decent shop and use that. I think thats what jogi has running atm and he has a aan manifold.

Be interesting to see if a front rad and charge cooler setup would play. You'd have to route the boost round the front of the engine and play with the water hoses somewhat. Careful with relying on the water injection. From what I've read, water WI does not do the same job as an IC. IC gives denser air than a WI setup. Having both maximised is best tho.

WI is prety amazing with its temprature drop, I run it on all the street and drag cars I build, even my 700hp RB'd S14 runs straight 95 pump fuel with W/I, I usualy see on average 15 to 20 degree C drop. I wouldnt use it without any form of charge cooling but with a air/water it should be mint, I must get the engine into this car and start playing around with available space.
