Just dreaming of that day when Finnish goverment allows e85. At this moment the diesel is the baddest thing on earth and e85 is much worse than drugs I don't understand the brains of this country...

Wow, E100 in brazil? Never heard of that used in gasoline engine. Would be nice to try it, if it even possible to run on gas-engine. I think in todays world it would be "impossible" to get it to detonate. Niiiice... Big boost... Niiice...

This is a very interesting thread. We have E100 here in Brazil, and it costs pratically half the price of gasoline. After reading this, I´m definetly going to give it a try next year. I´m running premium 95(ron+mon/2) oktane gas, but ethanol has close to 110 (ron+mon/2), I think that´s going to make a good upgrade on power when I time it correctly. My RS2 has original turbo, bigger injectors and a 3 inch free exhaust system with no cats. Maybe using alcohool I can get 400 crank hp using 1.6bar boost. What do you think?
Espen, we here have a cold start mechanism for vehicles running ethanol. It´s basically an extra injector that sprays gasoline from a separate reservoir (with around 3 litres) connected to a temperature sensor. So, when temperature is, let´s say, below 3 degrees, that injector is trigged by a solenoid and you can have a perfect cold start. My 2 cents.

    Regards

    Nilo

What size injector will i need for that concidering that I have MRC remap?

My Transporter V6 already run on E85 and my butt dyno tell me it's got more torque.

It's not Audi but scooby sorry

The NASOIC thread is very interesting with lots of good info.
I think injectors of around 500cc will work well with your setup. You also need a wideband lambda. Most likely you will need an adjustable fuel pressure regulator for fine tuning the AFR. 044 pump might be required too.
I got my Siemens 630cc injectors for $45 a piece on Ebay and paid $180 for the 044 pump also off Ebay.

As can be seen from my original 3rd gear graph, I had some hesitation at the onset of boost, and a hole in the curve at max torque. At first I thought this was due to me lifting the throttle for a split sec, then feared that it was the clutch slipping.
Turned out to be misfire due to very rich mixture: AFR's in the 10's in fourth gear. With E85, that mixture is pretty hard to fire up. Gradually lowered the fuel pressure from 4 to 3.6 bar and got rid of the hesitation and misfire. Nice and smooth curves now.

Graph 1 shows power and torque uncorrected for temperature, etc. 401ps (395bhp) and 552nm at the wheels. 4th gear test would have given a few hp and nm more due to more boost and lower inertia losses.

Graph 2 shows the torque curve with 3.6 bar fuel pressure vs 4.0 bar

Graph 3 shows the power curves from two pulls made approx. 3 minutes apart

Mine starts relatively well in 5+ degs, but that 0 today was really PITA.But hopefully i will be able to adjust the values to get it started for the 3.-4. time, compared todays 10.

    Thanks

Haven't started it in freezing temps yet, but I suspect that it will be a problem, even with the winter time E75 mix at the pump.
The solution is to use a block heater or simply to spray a little bit of cold start spray (WD40 is supposed to work too) through a vacuum port on the intake manifold. That makes it fire right up. Both my cars are driven only now and then (ride my bicycle most of the time), so I don't mind the hassle, really.

Not sure about the cold start settings in the ECU.

So isn't the average car running this stuff, actually producing more CO2 as a result ?

And have the tree huggers worked out how many square miles of biomass would be needed to supply the worlds automotive fuel requirements with E85 ? The numbers just don't add up... Aint it curious that its essentially a subsided form of G-force increasing, grin inducing, upgrade for any potential turbo engine owner. Enjoy it while you can

Another question - seeing as I can't buy E85 here - could I pour a bottle of Vodka into the tank, hoik up the fuel pressure and go have some fun ?
I don't remember the exact percentages, but CO2 emissions from E85 should be approx 1/5th of that from running on petrol. However, the point is that net CO2 emission is zero, since the plant absorbs the same amount of CO2 when it grows (photosynthesis) as it releases when it is being burned.

Vodka will help, but sorta expensive way too boost octane

    96% moonshine would be better

In fact just manufacturing and transporting the E85 to the pumps is emitting more pollution than just going with petrol, which gives a negative effect on mother nature despite the lower CO2 emissions when burnt in an engine.
    Oh, the irony

At least that's what the tree huggers is trying to convince us of here in Sweden, you must ALWAYS have a guilty conscience when driving a car even though you try to make the right decisions and be "environmental friendly".

But that put aside, at least Norway and Sweden has so many new E85 rolling on the roads every year that they simply can't back down on it now, it would be devastating.

But god almighty it's a good fuel

Go easy on the Vodka , it's probably only 40% ethanol and ~56% water

The petrol content of E85 is 95 octane or lower, but the octane of the E85 mix is 104+. Effective octane (due to cooling) is 115+
No harm on turbo engine, the opposite is in fact true. Exhaust gas temp is lowered by approx. 100degC, exhaust volume is increased, so the turbo spools faster. Peak cylinder pressure is lower (means less stress on engine internals). (peak pressure is lower, but the burn lasts longer, so the average cylinder pressure is higher, thus the higher torque and power numbers)

AKA bioethanol. Good for the environment (lower CO2 emissions) and VERY good for turbocharged engines:mischeif:
