    Warming up the engine

    How do treat your engine?

I try not to exceed 4000rpm before the oil temperature reaches 90 deg C. The previous owner also did this. Do you think this is overkill or good practice. I have never owned a Turbo charged car before and although knowledgable about cars, have no specific knowledge or experience with Turbos.

How carefully do you have to warm up the S2 motor?

    What does everyone else do?

    Am I being too ****?

    Cheers,

    Steve.

(edited to say 90 deg C!)

    Steve,

I think just use her gently til she is warm, nail the pants off her (as per Tom's S2 driving manual) then let her cool down as much as pos before parking her up and switching off.

I'm sure there are many people who use it hard from cold, and turn it off. red hot! probably the Uno turbo guys...;-)

Also, have you got a perfect side on shot of your S2??

I'm only doing that because it needs a rebuild soon and I don't really care too much at present. Gotta do a gearbox rebuild too and a new clutch should be winging its way to me. Digresion.....sorry!

Pretty much the same as you - possibly even more gentle. That's partly forced by the roads round where I am - it's difficult (read as "impractical" or "illegal") to even think about caning it at the times I'm normally driving around. Plus, I'm far enough from dual carriage / motorway for the car to warm up before using more right foot on the on-slip.

Yeah similar on mine, go easy staying below 3500-4000 until its warmed up on the water and the oil needle starts to creep up.

Damn.. I wont let mine go past 2000 rpm until its warmed up. Only time there are any tailbacks following an audi s2 . Even after it has warmed up I dont think ive ever been past 5000 rpm. usually change gear at around 2500 rpm.

Caused a tailback following mine by sticking to the speed limit. There's a road not far from me which has recently been designated a 30 zone (which is fair since it is genuinely residential) coming down from 50. Sticking to 30 tho' meant that there was a queue behind. The person directly behind me did get a touch too impatient tho' since they overtook and easily hit 60. Shame there were no cameras around that day really. (There's a sentence I don't put together very often!)

I do enjoy sitting at the speed limit (or maybe just above) on my way to work and tormenting the reps when they try to overtake by accelerating so they don't get past the rear quarter. There faces are a picture.

The ECU (I presume) on my Celica GT4 used to curtail the fun until the water(?)/oil(?) temp came up to the operating range.

The S2 is, in general a more sophisticated car I believe, and I've often wondered whether there is a similar ECU feature on the Audi?

                          But I've not noticed it!!

The Celica GT4 was a more modern vehicle and newer ideas appeared on it. I wonder if the ECU limited power to reduce emissions until the cat was hot?

Never past 5,000?? :mischeif: Ask Paul N about where my tacho has been... appparently I've voided my engine warranty due to excessive engine revs! I thought it was my bike... wondered why the valves were bouncing so early....

Treat her with respect til warm, enjoy, cool her down. The Toyota ECU trick is a neat idea!
