    3B ECU's becoming mobile...

Have had 2 people after 3B ECU's in the last week - apparently, it seems they are becoming sought after. The first enquiry came from someone who'd had his car in a garage for a clutch. The garage rang him to tell him the clutch was done, but car won't start. Did it have an immobiliser? It didn't, but it turned out the ECU was missing. As the car was recovered to this garage, the owner of the garage claimed they were not responsible for the missing ECU, it must have either come in to them without one, or the recovery man was responsible. Result? The owner has to fork out for a new or used ECU.

The second one was more straight forward - his window was smashed while the car was in his driveway and the ECU removed. A bit messy, as the thieves broke the AC pipe and destroyed the glovebox.

I guess people need to be on the alert, I doubt these are isolated incidents and are probably likely to occur again.

It would not help but it may be an idea to engrave/permenantly mark the registration number on the ECU case and even the circuit board. If a bracket was put over the ECU and fastened down more, the thugs may damage more of the interior.

Can the ECU be used for other cars, golfs etc? ( I think not) but this could be an explanation. If a tale has gone around that the ECU from an S2 will give your car lots more power then people may want this ECU.

There was a runour that a Lotus Elan twin cam exhaust cam would fit in the Ford kent cross flow engine. This led to a couple of lotus Elan thefts, they were found burnt out with the cam covers removed. The Kent has one cam!

It was Audi Parts Guru that they tried to nick an ECU from. His is ABY too but a thief may not know the difference.

I doubt these will turn up on eBay somehow - they'll be somewhat deeper underground I think - as are most things stolen to order...

I dont think this is a new thing,if you think about the cost of a ECU for any car is a lot,and there just as easy if not easier to steal than a stereo, and worth a lot more.
I remember a long long time ago,i went to see a Opel Manta GTE in a VX dealer(wasnt me think of buyin it),and when the saleman brought keys out to start it wouldnt start, turned out the ECU had been stolen along with another few cars in the lot.
Good way to avoid your getting whipped, would be to go to a breakers and pick up a simialir lookin box and bit of loom, and put it in your car as a decoy and moving your std ECU out the way a bit,and just hope the person who steals it them gets his brains kicked out for rippin some dodgy car dealer off,The razor blades also sounds nice.
