Hmm.. i meant the earth of the coil packs.
But you're right, at least the earths of battery and alternator should always be fine too. I once 'repaired' an alternator just by cleaning the connectors inside and outside from corrosion and dirt. Just my 2 pence though..
I think its a good idea, seem to always get funny problems that can often be sorted by checking all the earths are attached and have a good contact.
I will definately be checking them
Ive got a new main radiator to fit at the weekend so will do it then and get the car over to my mechanic to check for fault codes.. im getting really excited about driving it, my 3.0 V6 GTV is good fun, but doesnt compare the the s2!

With ground connection i was referring to the electrical connection you made with a screw on the back of the head.. sorry for my english..
Sorry, i wasnt trying to be funny, i knew what you meant, what i meant was should i just be cleaning the earths to do with the ignition system, or all of them (gearbox earth etc.)
The "custom modified" nature of the 115R 1.8T coils that Apikol supplies with their plug and play kit refers to the fact that the coils have to be modified slightly to have a bit of the hard plastic removed and some of the ribs on the rubber sealing ring trimmed away. Nothing inside the coil pack is modified. You can buy a normal VAG 115R coil and use it to replace the one that is having the problem (trim it like the one you remove).
Multifunction temperature switch. You might want to check out this device map (it's for an AAN but the ABY is basically the same except for the intake manifold arrangement):
I have run the 1.8 coil conversion for nearly 2 yrs and no problems at all on the Avant ..After reading it again..I would check what plugs it has first and take it from there as it might be something as simple as duff plugs
1.8t Coils can be bought individually no problem, the only issue is there is about a million and one revisions of the coils.
See if you can find a part number on them.
(06B 905 115R) this is the part no. of the coils provided with the kit..
last time my mechanic friend tried to get the car on VAGCOM it wouldnt connect, he sometimes has problems with the older 2 pin style plugged cars, but we were able to get it to connect to a Snap-on Diagnostic machine, small hand held jobbie, will this be able to identify a dodgy coil, and also if it can will it tell which one?
