    spark plug thread poss stripped

finally have the coupe running but missfiring really bad. cylinder number 2 has the plug just spinning round and it wont tighten up, it just turns.
    cant even get it out

read somewhere i can have it re threaded in place rather then take the head off.

    Anyone experienced this?

i would be suprised if you could get it re threaded in situ without filling the motor with metal shavings-i would have thought the head would have to come off-either way best of luck
    It's a love/hate relationship with the S2,i love it,it hates me

You can have it done with the head on, but you I would strongly discourage you from doing that for the reason that add mentions. You really need to take the head off if you want to do it right. I sourced a replaced head (10v) rather than having the old one repaired, that was just my personal preference.

If you are getting it repaired then a time-sert is your weapon of choice.

As the plug is turning in place there ARE metal shavings, i suggest a clean head off job. This way you could see if there is any damage already..

          Turns both ways...

WTF...sould really come out in that case, if you can grip the top of the plug?

Has the 'nut' on the plug sheared...and this is spinning and not the actual plug? Snapped in 2?

Sounds likea head off job if that plud ain't shifting.

Just went through this with my 200 20v. But after pulling the head I found all the water jackets to be eroded beyond repair. So I got another head. I would suggest pulling the head and fixing it properly. some pix of the rebuild

                whats wrong with just helicoils?
Any cut swarf that falls down into the cylinder can be blown back out with compressed air.
And anyway, if a little swarf is left, its no biggie, its aluminium, the cylinder walls and pistons are made of harder stuff so it shouldn't do any damage before it gets ejected through the ex valves anyway.
And at the end of the day aluminium is used as a lubricant!
I think you're all being just a tad too cautious

If you ask any respected motor engineer they'll recommend taking the head off and using a time-sert to repir the thread.

Thanks Dave, I've seen this video before when reseaching this work. Its serves as an excellent example of why the head needs to be removed, unless the prospect of chipped piston crowns caused by swarf entering the cylinder bore seems like a good idea. Do it once, do it right.
