Hi Aelred - that sounds interesting, tho' I don't have a second person to help every time I need to start the car... which wire is the one to ground??

Anyway I've got another small garage locally (which has been highly recommended by an Audi owner) to order the part and fit it in Jan. Thanks to all for offers of help, but getting car intoa garage over the hols was also a problem, as I'm too much of a wuss to do this myself.

Just for reference for people... Vagparts wanted £75, Bristol Audi £150, this garage are quoting £115 (all plus VAT).

@Aelred - this sounds a bit risky to me...

That signal from the CMP 'goes low' for a fraction of a second on every camshaft rotation - so that the ECU can differentiate from the crank ref sensor when it is on the way to TDC on the compression stroke for #1.

If you jiggle this temporary wire to workaround a faulty CMP then you have 50-50 chance of telling the ECU about the exhaust stroke for #1... So I guess that means the engine doesn't start and the subsequent cyls are out of phase and nothing starts - at least we hope that it doesn't try to start.

So am I right in saying that if you get the phase of your wiggle right then the engine starts, and if the phase is wrong then the engine doesn't start and no damage is done.

Don't forget that there's the crank sensor too so you've got to get the 2 sensors at the same time, if you're 180deg out then it'll fire on the exhaust stroke and won't do anything... good little trick that Aelred.

you can still get them straight from a bosch dealer for £75, save yourself the 40 odd quid and use it to pay the garage for changing it , you planning on getting the belts, water pump etc done when they're in there changing the sensor ?

Eeeek... £25 ... I've been had !!! Too late now as the garage have orderd it and it's allegedly on way to them. Thats the trouble with us amateurs who won't dare do things ourselves.

Had the belts changed last year - and leaving water pump well alone for now
