    RS2 power upgrade questions

    Hi Guys,

I’ve been a bit distracted over Christmas thinking about power upgrade options to my RS2. It’s a RHD in good working order and is completely standard. It’s just had the MRC health check and had the all clear.

(There’s one job which needs doing which is to replace the exhaust manifold to head gasket manifold and turbo to manifold gasket).

I now want to raise the power output as much as I can without major changes to turbo and engine internals and I also want to keep the standard exhaust system.

I am thinking of an MRC Phase 1 and as we need to change the gasket to the EM possibly changing it to a Wagner RS2 Evo as well.

The MRC Phase 1 will take power to @360bhp. Would the Evo EM add a little more power too? What might this be? Guesses/suggestions welcomed!

The alternative is to save up for a more radical upgrade, to take power to circa 450bhp, but what changes would I need to make and what sort of budget would I need?

All comments and ideas really appreciated!

    Happy New Year to all!

    Simon

The next step would be to change turbo poss garret gt 3071 ,check out PAP VAS spec on here
.conrods, injectors ,intercooler exhaust to 3inch turboback and poss bosch fuelpump and another remap ,all this is needed to get optimal results from your hardware ,
    Budget 3k at a guess

If you want a decently cheap quick upgrade just get a decent remap and save up for a engine rebuild with uprated rods as thats the main thing that will let you down.

If apart from these gasgets your cars running fine and in light of the current financial climate my suggestion is just get a remap and enjoy it till things improve

Interesting option there andy, quite surprised that running that turbo without uprated rods, I wonder how much its been dialled down to save them?

one other thing, I think that the 7a FPR is somewhere about a 4 bar but not 100%, it was mentioned once or twice before, hence why I kept mine when I stripped that 20v.

              Simon,

sounds like you got a good RS2 there what colour is it?

I'm also in the same position as yourself and considering doing MRC phase 1 remap and at the same time i was also going to go for the Milltek exhaust.

If your thinking about going 450bhp+ you are going to have to start changing engine internals turbos, downpipe, rods, etc.... budget wise, thousands IMHO.

One of the reasons i would like to change the map is try and reduce the turbo lag and getting it to boost a bit earlier, after 3.5k revs mines feels like some body has strapped a few rockets to my RS2.

How much was your health check?

Have you though about Paul Nugent's RS2 Homefry?

Thats what i thought ,i would change the rods as a matter of course as we have all read the horror stories on here .

afaik its more the torque than the bhp which kills them, high torque at low revs bends the hell out of them, more so in 3b's especially with the spark hop possibility for us.

                      There's your answer Simon.

have you thought about doing the bushings? Powerflex? Thats my first upgrade but first i have to do the thermostat, temp display and sensor, timing belt, pulley, waterpump, suede seats and door cards, recon the wheels, 996 TT calipers then map and exhaust, I'm going to be busy next year

Hi, many thanks for your speedy replies. The Phase 1 tweak is within my budget so I think I'll go for this and start saving for a major rework in a couple of years time if I want to go the big power upgrade route.

Is an upgraded exhaust manifold not worth it at this stage either? When we change the gasket we'll check for cracks on the existing OEM manifolds. (I've heard that a crack on the EM can appear by the 5th cylinder port and that there is an excepted tolerance of up to 6mm?).

                        Many thanks

tbh the best thing you can do in my very honest opinion is have a look at s2avants project thread and how he's upgraded his s2avant

it now goes, stops and handles better than most supercars i've seen.

plus his is just rs2 spec remapped and iirc did a sub four second to 60 at this years gti.

OEM manifold is good for anything you will get from the turbo etc, its only when you start going mental that you might want that.

Providing your manifold is crack free, spend the money elsewhere on something that needs it or save it for a major upgrade in the future.

These 360 or more hps are inadequate, insufficient, poor for one avant with 18" rims...in my opinion.

PS: one question, If I put RS2´s IC I ´ll have more lag, not?
