    Sensible turbo choice.

Ok then. Latter this year I am looking to replace the turbo on my S6, for one that spins up quicker (if possible) and gives more power without going the replacement rod route, etc. (Its getting a little noisy but no smoke as yet!)

The car has already got a ‘RS2 EM, bigger SS exhaust, free flow 200 CPI cats, 034 M’Sport ignition conversion, Samco's, K+N’ filter and a host of other small negligible mods’s (I have excluded the phase 1 MTM software as it will be replaced after the turbo change)

I am not after anything off the chart, as the money spent will equate to a new turbo and a MRC remap. So if the car sits around ‘325 to 350 BHP’ I will be happy. Can I assume once I get my injectors cleaned they will be OK for the new set up? (The only other item I will probably do will be a bigger intercooler but then that will be 2010 and that’s it in the engine department!)

Lastly, will the new turbo be able to be used with the old MTM phase 1 software for a few weeks with a soft right foot?

Will the 'sensible' replacement turbo take all the old (new) bits already fitted to my car?

I am also looking for a good UK supplier of turbochargers too?

(There will be a bigger brake question later on today!)

    Regards,

    Andy H.

The most sensible turbo is the RS2 unit, it's cheaap, available and bolt on. It can be run on standard k24 injectors with a remap from Paul / MRC etc. Then you can upgrade to an RS2 ECU (or map and map sensor upgrade) & injectors.

You will not be able to run this turbo with the MTM map without the risk of poor fuelling and thus damage.

Power on RS2 turbo with k24 stuff is IIR 310-320bhp, power on RS2 injectors can be up to 380bhp.

      Cheers for that.

The car did get a ‘3bar map sensor’ when QST did the MTM stuff a few years ago. (Or should I say that’s what the sales blurb stated)

And basically give the new turbo to MRC at the same time to fit, rather than doing the change my self? (I was hoping for one run with the turbo fitted to deliver the car to them!)

Would the RS2 turbo (OEM or replica?) Spin up the same or would the remap cure this? (As I like the whip of the turbo I already have)

Would replica RS2 injectors from 034 M’sport be OK, or would they be cheaper from the UK for genuine new kit?
Can I assume the fuel pump will be OK? (It OK at the present with no faults)

      Regards,

      Andy.

I believe that all AAN/ABY cars have 3 bar as standard.

Get a secondhand RS2 unit in good condition and have it rebuilt with a 360degree thrust bearing at some point.

Not sure on injectors, you'll have to take advice from your chosen tuner on that one...

AAN & ABY have a 2.5 bar MAP sensor as standard. RS2 got the 3bar one.

Reading your spec you've got 2 choices for more power, RS2 turbo which is bolt on, you'd need new injectors and a new map. MRC Highboost or S2central Homefry chips.

Or a 2871 turbo, again new injectors but also new oil and water lines. A full remap from MRC or 2871 homefry from S2central.

Your stock injectors would be a big limiting factor, if you used them with an RS2 turbo your limited to 315 bhp a good 65 bhp less than your turbo's potential.

I had been looking at a “K26/GT2871” (3” 0.63AR) + turbocharger from 034 Motorsport and a set of their ‘RS2 replica’ injectors as well. Would you know if this turbo would need a new MAF to turbo hose or would a new standard one be OK?

I am quite prepared to do a 'S2central fry up', as the car can stay up my drive and I am hoping I can flog off the MTM software as well. (New chips though)

                  (My cars an auto though!)

At what point would I need to consider a rod change as I do not want to go down that route for a few years, if at all, if I can help it, etc.

                  Cheers,

                  Andy.

2871 is awesome but needs to be mapped carefully on a car with standard engine internals FWIR. If your budget can stretch to one then there's little comparison, RS2 is best VFM but 2871/3071 are much newer and will give better results and potential. As for injectors, again, take advice from your chosen tuner really, RS2 injectors on a 2871 should be fine for a sensible map.

Rods are good for about 400ftlbs and with careful mapping can achieve 400bhp. Better to be safe than sorry tho and I'd prefer to spend the money on internals than turbo...

Auto isn't ideal... Big turbo requires upgraded clutch on manual cars so not sure what the torque convertor can take. I'm sure the information is on here, you'll just have to look!

You can run standard rods on the 2871, RS2 and 3071 with reduced low end torque

You would need the 034 hose with 3" inlet

I wouldn't use the 03 rs2 injectors personally. Either use the bosch RS2 ones or get 600cc ones which will not need to be upgraded in the future.

The decision on injectors will need to chosen in conjuction with what chip you'll be running.

So, based on what I have read and the forum guidance, I think I will go for the following when I have saved up over the next few months:

K26/GT2871 ((3” + 0.63AR) Turbocharger, plus any suitable plumbing, etc)
                        New 034 Motorsport 3” hose
New original RS2 injectors but potential for 600cc if required. (Rather not go the 600cc route but will do if instructed but the only other mod will be a bigger intercooler in 2010 and probably another remap to boot!)
                        Remap. (Reduced low end TQ)

The auto box in the ‘S6’ is supposed to be the same as the ‘S6+’ according to catalogue engineering but it might be on the limit in an S6+ anyway but has anybody gone well beyond the S6+ HP/TQ with this auto box. (I have had the auto box go into ‘limp home’ mode in the past through going past the TQ/rev limit!!)

Almost certainly I think the guidance will be for a custom remap to take all the above into consideration but I am interested in the alternatives.

What do you think the ball park BHP/TQ figures will be when all is said and physically done?

Lastly, if I did go for strengthen rods what would be a good guide cost and type? (Gulp)

                        Regards,

                        Andy.

                        PS
I might be loosing the plot here but is there a section within the forum, which gives simple general menu based upgrade information based on standard engines and potential good evolutions there after?

Changing the rods is going to really really increase your budget. For your spec on a 2871 you won't need it IMO

This the mistake I made with my Coupe, I should have kept it simple and run the standard engine and rs2 turbo I already had now i'm on a new car and new engine

Your looking at 400 bhp although Kalsket hit 450 bhp with his 2871 setup.

Look at a thread by Diesel Des for his 2871 setup.

                            Many thanks for the information.

I was hoping for around the mid '350 BHP' region so what you have indicated is more than I hoped for and that is good. I will steer clear of the new rod region too and concentrate on bigger brakes instead or a new gearbox if I blow it up!!

The bigger intercoolers I see, (i.e. the 034 Motorsport version, etc) will that dictate a remap as well or will I get away with that one for a few months or forever?

It's all going to be cheaper than another car and hopefully more fun too, not to mention it will not change the expensive insurance I have with Adrian Flux, as it is already for a modified car and extra mod’s will not change the price. (For once anyway!)

                            Andy.
