In the UK you can certainly get away without the aux rad. Even when ragged to death on the track my temps stay on 90..... however my oil does go over 130 so I have often pondered removing the aux rad and plumbing in an oil cooler in its place

I have always wondered what it is for. I hardly get over 80°C water temp unless in summer when i?m stuck in traffic. But in these situations I think the aux rad. doesn't help.
There's also the option of shortening the tubes if you think you won't need it anymore.
Speaking for myself I might keep it as it's a shiny new radiator. And if I want to get rid of some kg --> the driver has some extra kg on the bones. Actually more than the radiator's weight.

Just to divert from caravans slightly i have removed my aux rad many moons ago now with all this cold weather we are having on a 80mph cruise on the motorway the temp is only 2 notches above 50*C, anyone else noticed this ?

Its although there is too much cooling so i might try and block off half the grille just like the aux rad did to get the temps back up slightly.

I have similar problems, I have flushed the cooling system and refilled but during this cold weather I get very little heat out the blower.

Things have Improved slightly with rad removal and flushing but still not what I would call hot air. If I have the fan on anymore than setting 2 the heat is killed completely within a few seconds.

I don't see how this can be matrix problem as Its flushed and dose not loose any water

I have also checked the stat, all OK.

I need to find a way of diverting more hot air through the matrix.

                Any ideas ?

                cheers

Sounds like you have an airlock in the heater matrix. I've had this on my car, all seems fine with the fluid level and I'd bled the system as well as I could, however, heater temps were down from usual and they only got better after I'd been round a few bends or a tight roundabout. It was air in the matrix that was causing the problem, so you need to ensure the system has all the air out of it. There's a small bleed screw on the hose to or from the matrix, have you tried bleeding the air out from that? Beware the plastic top may break off the bleed screw when you attempt to move it.

Have go at blowing through it, get your gob around the pipe and blow! just changed the matrix on my old mans A6 AEL. Could hardly blow through it, new one is fantastic!

I had to fit a tow bar on my RS2! ended up making one from a genuine coupe westfalia.
