what can be done to a 7a engine?

7A pistons are flat topped, don't see any reason why you cant machine a dish into them to lower the CR.

Yep, flat as a pancake. Using a thicker head gasket might be an easier option to lower the CR.

034 do a range of copper gaskets to suit the application. That might be your best bet.
