    Damn you wobbly bottom pulley

My bottom pulley has started to wobble far enough to make the belts 'noisey' this was a brand new £330 + VAT part from audi fitted in march 2007 and has done 25,000 miles

Is it common to change this part every 2 years or so ?

Does anyobdy know where i could get a solid pulley from i read theres a company called Maple Racing but i cannot find any info on them

    Cheers

      .

      1. No,
      2. Should be cheaper from QC,
      3. Have you taken it off yet, could be loose or another problem...

Bear in mind that audi parts come with a 2 yr warranty if it's faulty then get them to give you another one, hey they may even fit it for free happened to me one time, dodgy part fitted by me audi then fitted a new one themselves.

i have heard of that the bolt losen it self when tightend wrong. when i left my crankshaft and pulley to my eginge builder for balancing, he told me that i should use copper paste and not loctite. and a diamond coated washer betwen the crankshaft and pulley. when you tighten with loctite you dont get the right nm. because of the heat generated when you tighten it, loctite starts to harden.
hope you understand me. i dont much english anymore.

Before you do anything about the pulley, check the end of the crank runs true. It's not uncommon to find the end of the crank is bent.

Thanks for the ideas, i'll have a look to see if i can see anything tomorrow.

With regards to seeing if the front of the crank runs true is it a case of taking the pulleys off and using a DTI guage or is there an easier way ?

Yes. Get the pulley off and get a DTI on the end of the crank. The V-belt pulley/damper bolts to the timing belt pulley, which sits on the tip of the crank, so any movement is magnified. Fingers crossed the crank is ok, but it's worth checking before you spend any more money.
