Next step then is to take an ABY pulley to bits and identify what can be stripped off it to reduce that rediculous weight.

Taking the weight out of the torsional damper negates the point of having it... The idea behind it's weight is it is heavy enough to resist the movement of the crankshaft, which is what helps the crankshaft to resist the movement. Reducing the weight is what the billet one does, which is to 'help improve engine responsiveness', but what it does do is stop it being able to damp the movement.

Well you could but it think you would reduce the effectiveness of it as the damper part will have been designed to work with the weight of the pulley part.

You would be far better off just taking the weight off the flywheel were it doesn't matter, you can easily remove loads of weight from the flywheel or fit an ally one , you can get them so light you need a tick over of 1200rpm and are a nuisance to drive. One you have the weight down this low you wouldn't want it any lighter so there is no need to lighten the front pulley.

The main body of the damper is the rubber part, as you pointed out earlier. The metal pulleys are what I was talking about. It might be that there is not much weight in these anyway but interesting to look.

The belt drive part has very little weight in it, its all in the damper. Best option for removing weight is a 3B flywheel and front pulley combo IMO.

Righto. But based on the fact that the front pulley was changed for the ABY crank, better to leave it all ABY so it's properly matched. Ally FW it is then

I dont see whats different between a 3B and ABY crank, IMO the larger heavier pulley was matched with the dual mass flywheel not the crank.

I found out the other day there's more than one type of I5 crank

Well it's already on the car so all I need is a clutch that will take a 3071 and a few kg removing from it... hey presto
