I put a non lightened 7A unit on my motor as replacement to the Dual Mass effort and it feels much more responsive through the revs without any real sacrifice of torque.

The lighter the flywheel the more responsive but less low down torque so there needs to be a fine balance.

Realistically as you can pick a 7A flywheel up for next to nothing and get them lightened and balanced for an extra £100 including a reface why would you go to the effort of making one from scratch?

I paid ~£50 delivered for my 3B item but they are getting harder to find from watching recent posts. If you had a new one made in the 8kg region for around £200 then that would represent a very good option for anyone looking to fit a SM FW because by the time you've sourced, shipped and lightened a 7A or 3B one I think many people would prefer to buy a new one for a few £s more. Just my opinion. Guess it depends on costs of having it manufactured.

this is why i am considering making some .
it cost me over £100 to machine my 3b one and the chap damaged so many of his machining bits due to it being hard and he said he wouldn't do it for that price again .

It's deffo a good idea just make sure they are not too light 10kg is a good trade off.

I never weighed the one that went in my car, Pisobiker lightened it a bit.

The dual mass could be used by Jack Cousteau as a deep see diving weight sure is comfy though for driving however.

                OE 3B is about 10kg.

I'm not aware of the material spec or any heat treatment so couldn't comment on machining. However, FWs are machined all the time and I would assume (!) that Audi don't make their FWs from a different material to BMW, VW etc. so somewhere experienced in machining FWs shouldn't have a problem as they'll know the settings required to do the best job.
