    Swapping chips?

Hi i have got hold of a chipped ecu. But it is from an early non-imobilised ABY.

My ABY is the late type with alarm and immob.

What is the easiest thing to do?
Should i swap the chips between the ECU's, or will this not work due to the diffences in the ECU's

Or should i get the chipped ECU moddified so it is fully functional with working immob in my car?

    Any tips welcome!

You would need to get sockets put into your ecu so that the chips could be swapped over afaik, someone like s2central or mrc would be able to do this.

As mentioned the other option is to get the immobilisor enabled on the mtm ecu, to do this would probably be a pita depending how it works with your key etc as you might need to have it setup for the car i'm not sure.

Probably easiest thing to do is get the chips swapped into your ecu but then you might have the problem of the chips might contain the immob info.

Leave the immob off, you dont need for the ecu to work. It's if it's on you have problems!

I think he wants it added for the added security incase someone nicks it or the oem feel.

If its just for security I personally would get an aftermarket one, cheaper and more recognised by insurance companies as its newer technology.

Who's going to recode it then?

I think thats right. You can use an unimmo ecu in an immo vehicle but not an immo ecu in an unimmo vehicle. If that makes sense. I am sure Paul N will advise.
Actually Pm me. I might be able to help if you want to keep your immo!

The non-immo chipset will work in an immo ECU - but it will have to be socketed.

If you want to retain immo functionality on the homefries then send me a PM.

The ECU will NOT need to be recoded - unless it is moved to a different IMMO car.

Try the non-immo ECU and see how you like it... Then decide if you want that behaviour with your IMMO ECU.

The Chips are MTM. So i will need to remove the standard chips and solder in sockets to my current ECU to accept the MTM chips from the new ECU. And then the standard chips will slot into the sockets of the new ECU (i want to do a complete swap round).

If i do this then my Immob will work? I know it seems silly to do all this to keep the standard immob, but id rather have one than not. and i dont have the money to throw at an aftermarket one at the moment.

Paul, so as an alternative you would be able to take the new MTM ecu and enable it as an immobiliser ECU, but it will also need coding as it will be from a different car??

Twoqu, drop me a PM mate im curious to know your idea??

@re2500.... your new ECU is just plug and play with its existing MTM chips - but you will lose the immo functionality. Same deal if you swap the non-immo MTM chips into your immo ECU (assuming that its socketed in the 1st place - which theu mostly aren't).

If you want factory immo and upgraded chipset then MTM ECU won't do it for you.

I can do two things here...

                      1. Offer you homefries that are immo-enabled...

                      2. Restream the MTM chipset into an immo-enabled package that will work with your immo ECU... Dunno how much pain until I see the MTM chipset... It may or may not be a formal ABY stream of course - and the real early ones have less OBD capability than the later ones.

Send me a PM if interested in taking it further. I might need another spare ECU so could maybe strike a deal somehow here without money changing hands.

Thanks for all your help guys, paul especially! im starting to understand it more.

Right.....an advancement. twoqu has kindly PM'd me and been an absolute gent by offering to swap my MTM non-immob chips for a pair of MTM immob chips, all depending on authenticity!!

So if i socket my ECU i can just drop these in and bob is your uncle. no recoding or anything...correct??
I have a electrical engineer colleague who is handy with a soldering iron, so if im not confident he will be.

Another question is can i put my Immob chipset into the Unimmob ECU. The chap i am gettting the original MTM ecu from wants a standard ECU back as a spare, so he can put his own map on for his car. He seemed happy that he would be able to disable an Immob ECU for his use, will this still be the case with an unimmob ecu with immob chips??

Sorry for so many questions but so far you seem to have the answers.

Last question. What size sockets do i need for the chips? I havent opened one yet to have a peek.

Thanks Again chaps. Dunno what i'd do without this forum sometimes!

If you want... I can check the lineup on those immo MTM chips - I'll be able to tell immediately if they are suitable for ABY.

I've never tried putting immo chips into a non-immo ECU... I don't know if the immo ECU uses any additional hardware on board to talk to the immo - it might - it might not.

Sockets are 28-pin 0.6" pitch - two required. Be careful removing the old chips - they can be killed by desoldering if you are unlucky.

                          PM sent also.

Well if you put an immo ecu on a non immo vehicle it will start but cuts out almost immediately. There must be some difference in the ecu itself as I understand the immo box sends a pulsed signal out.

The immo ECU expects a 'happy' signal back from the immo - thats all... ATM I dunno if that is some secret message exchanged over K&L wires or whether some additional chip on the immo ECU is used to do anything more intensive for that comms mechanism.

The spare ECU going back to an owner with a non-immo car will only be useful with a non-immo chipset.
