    Basic Question

Can someone just clear something up for me?

My original plan was to slowly upgrade my ABY to RS2 spec, however as I am
not in a position to do this in one "hit" - this would be a "long term" project.

So, I considered buying a second ABY engine to work on in the garage and
upgrade to a much higher spec (replacing everything), as and when funds
where available (this may take a couple of years! - but im in no hurry).
    Good idea I thought......

    But now Im confused again!!

    Strokers??

I realise, these increase the stroke of the engine and therefore it's displacement
increasing it to 2.5l or so - however; what are the advantages of a good "stroker"
unit over a standard ABY/ADU pumping out 380-400hp? Bearing in mind that it will
almost certainly be a daily driver.

Also cost issues, are they MEGA bucks compared to standard units and best left
    well alone.

Im 99.9% certain that I will be doing the second engine route (ABY) that is, but
just out of interest, some clarification would be great.

    Thanks. (Please keep it simple)

There's more than one type of stroker, infact there are 3

95.5mm crank in stock 220mm block
92.8mm crank in stock 220mm block
    95.5mm crank in diesel block

Unless you got the know the diesel block route is hard work although there's enough information on here to do it.

The easiest to build stroker is the 92.8mm crank in the 220mm block, no height issues can use stock length rods of 144mm

Yes they are expensive to build and the power level you have quoted you'd be better with a well sorted stock build however they produced sh*t more torque than stock.

The old adage of there being no substitute for CC is true enough... The 2.5 stroker makes more torque alright - but its quite a complex build as you have found out.

Your approach with a 2nd engine idea to build up slowly as funds permits is a sound idea - its a lot less risk and you can take your time doing things. You'll have plenty of 'oomf' with an RS2 setup using ABY or AAN as the starting point.
