Misfire due to split boot :-(

I must say, it actually feels good to be posting about a misfire problem

Anyway, I started the Avant today and within about 30s she starting missing again. Decided to have a little look, and immediately noticed that I could see spark between cylinder #2 boot and the head!

A close inspection revealed a small split about 2mm long in the rubber on the spark plug boot. As it's an 034 hi-output coilpack lead, it's not just a case of refitting a new boot from Steve's group-buy, figure I'll have to replace the whole lead

Question is, has anyone got an idea for a temporary patch-up job? Some kinda sealant or insulation tape that'll work for a bit? Or am I gonna have to find somewhere to just make a new cable up for me?

    Ross,

Replacement is the best cure but in the interim wrap self amalgamating tape around it...glad you found the misfire btw.

...and don't hold onto the lead with the engine running!

Don't worry seeing a spark coming from the rubber and jumping about 5mm to the head made me stay well away!

I've thought that this is a great excuse to replace the lead for cylinder #1 with a lead about 10cm longer, use that lead to replace cyl #2 and then I'll have enough slack on all leads to reroute them and fit the cover

Of course, in the mean time just want to see her running nice and smooth with a patch-up job if poss!

PS - managed to get 3L more water and coolant into the system, no more bubbles from the top of the rad now! And, running the car in the garage shakes the house

Insulating tape will work until you get a replacement!

Nice..Do you have a spare coil pack cover in your spares? I can always machine a slot into the edge where the leads are routed at the mo. I think that you will need to replace mostof them if you want to route them as audi intended...

Glad to hear the cooling system is sorted. So close now...let me know if you want one last pre-MOT meet.

You did pretty well with that Allen key pushing into the end of the coil pack lead

Cheeky git... made me wonder if an 034 coilpack and a 12V source could be used as a taser

Lol screw that I want a ghostbuster style proton pack from the engine bay

Looks like the party started without me, BMT and all that

If you don't know what BMT is don't ask!

What's the next step for the Avantness? I've got a few trips to make to run my engine in hopefully soon

BMT. Its either an acronym for Bone Marrow Transplant or Black Man Time. You decide.

Need to get hold of some good insulating tape and patch the boot - aparrently Gloucester B&Q should stock self-amalgamating rubber tape that will work for high-voltage applications and form an airtight seal Hopfully that'll be the misfire sorted.

Once she's running right, idle up to running temp to check temp sensor and thermostat all working OK. Decided after yesterday I need to do that with the car outside of the garage, it's acts like a bass tube with the car inside

Then check the connections on the reverse light unit on the gearbox.. if the thing needs changing I'll call you for a "how-to when the engine is in the way" walkthrough!

Also - there was a locking nut that was destroyed, the others were difficult but eventually came off without drilling into the stud, but I'm now looking at a replacement stud and 4X lug nuts (hear the transporter ones work a treat?)

Finally, need to see if the rubber strut-body hoses will come loose, they look pretty much fused to the hardline from the ABS unit so it may end up easier to replace the whole damn lot (with alot of help from Mark of course, and a pre-MOT meet with definitely be required).

Oh and there's a minor issue of the driver-side dip and beam not working. Guessing it's Sonic and his dodgy wiring so that should be an easy fix

I really don't want this to turn into a madwolf-esque MOT-failure thread so plan on doing this all within the next few weeks when time allows...
