    Intake temps-whats good

I have just placed a temp monitor into the pipe just before the throttle butterfly to see what the intake temp is. Driving was night the car was flying and the intake temp was down to 18.9!!
Today it is hot outside and i got a max of about 39 that was giving it everything up a hill. Flat out. On full boost at 150mph it was showing 34. Is this good or should i make an intercooler sprayer. I have got the bits to do this, but just want to know if these temps are high!

I've been thinking about building an intercooler spray system. If you don't mind me asking, what sort of system do you have in mind?

I am thinking along the lines of a temp sensor like you have triggering a water spray system when the intake temp rises above a certain figure with the water coming from my screenwash bottle via the headlamp washer pump.

Any suggestions, I seem to remember something being mentioned about water sprays a while back.

I bought a load of little sprayers from a garden centre!!!
Will use the rear washer pump as i never use this. I have a little pressure reg. and a one way valve to go inline. Will have it on by next weekend. Total cost so far £6!!

Friend fitted one to his SEAT ibiza and it gave him a 5 deg. redution in intake temps. Not too bad for 6 quid hey.
The jets spray just infront of the intercooler but when you are on the move then it doesn't matter, the water is directed on the thing.

I think its definately worthwhile whatever type of system you use, hi-tech like the autospeed system:

or low tech like the garden water spray nozzles (Tom are they the Hozelock ones? I've got a pack of them too).

I read an article in Car&Car Conversions a while back and they were testing some turbo motor and it had a cheap system fitted made out of washer jets. They dynoed it first with them switched off and then with them on........18bhp more :eek2:.
Intercooler efficiency probably has a bearing on any final gains, but its gotta be worth trying.

What do you mean for "18.9" and "39"? Are they 118.9 and 139 °F?

I was thinking of using the new fan type windscreen washer or headlamp washer jets. Looking at their spray pattern I think you could get a decent mist in front of the intercooler with one each end.

Not sure about controlling them. One solution is a simple on/off switch but I would prefer something a little more complex. I've had a few ideas about a temperature controlled system (not as complex as the autospeed one though) that switches on when the intake temp rises above a set level, possibly adjustable depending on ambient temps.

Where are you taking your readings from? and how have you fitted the sensor?

@Audiman: if the temps are in degrees C, it's just fine given the ambient temps!

Dude - 34 C ain't really so bad - seriously - I've seen 54 (fifty four celsius) and more at full chat on a rolling road. I wouldn't spend a LOT of time and energy trying to get much lower than such a figure in the real world.

Ben- i have fitted the end of the gauge inside the pipe that is just before the throttle body.

If with some 30°C outside temps (you didn't say how hot is "HOT" ) you get 39°C at full boost and medium speed....well that sounds really good to me !

Must definitly make some tests as well. My engine shows a sensible lowering of grunt and higher rpm boost kick after some accelerations at mid to low speeds. Need to find out how temps fluctuate before and after IC (before TB) ....

What I've measured on an RS2 while tuning it last week was on 40 deg C ambient we had 44-45 degree in the manifold on cruising and 68 degree C maximum in the manifold on sustained WOT in 5th gear (at speeds past 220 km/h). Subtract 20 degree C to both figures and this should be quite nice actually...

                      Cheers,

55-58 degree C in the manifold on a 20 degree C day should be cool, that's what I mean

Yeah, would be good enaugh, expecially if the car is developing over 350 hp (at engine).

Even more surprised with the great results obtained by Audimen !

Some more testing is needed. Ambient temp was about 25 ish degrees. Will be fitting high quality cooling system at the w/end!!

Should get some nice temp drops. Thought about using pure alcohol instead of water, but a bit worried about it catching fire if it hits the ex. manifold or turbo!!
