    The dreaded Mot...

Groan... I always have greater hair loss problems (through stress, pulling it out etc) at this time of year with the MOT looming.

Last year, it failed on emissions. Too high on Co2 or too high on Lambda, one or the other, and couldn't get it down on both at same time

I now know the previous cats were the wrong kind (they were for a n/a 2.3 20v - another garage rip off trick) - this year, got Milltek front to back, the 1-2-1 pipe is gone, just a straight through, and a single sports cat.

    Results:

    Efast idle

    Max Limit (Result)

    CO % Vol 0.30 (0.00)
    HC PPM 200 (9)
    Lambda 0.97/1.03 (1.01)

    Enatural Idle Test

    CO % Vol 0.50 (0.09)

As far as I can tell, sailed through - pass on everything. *Clunk* Someone pass the smelling salts.

BOTTOM LINE - if you were thinking of changing your twin cats to one sports cat, but worried about emissions... don't - if mine are anything to go by, you'll p!ss 'em.

Car's an ABY 93, 98k miles, serviced every 5 minutes (ok, 10 minutes, but no longer than that. Seriously, plugs changed after no more than 5k miles.) with all sorts of previous chequered history from letting clueless bullsh!tting muppets work on it. If you're reading this, you know who you are...

Right. I need a beer to calm me nerves...

Will you pass? An ABY with no cats? It depends on how friendly the MOT tester is/whether they go for a drink on Friday afternoon and 20 quid wouldn't go amiss...

Leigh's failed without cats last time round, mine failed WITH cats, just the wrong size, so at a guess I'd say an ABY without Cats will not pass the UK MOT emissions test (but probably pass in another countries...)

Good luck with that. Take a spare 20 quid with you and have a laugh and a joke with the MOT tester first, to 'test the water'. Make sure no men in brown trenchcoats, thick black rimmed national health specs, a thin pencil moustache, and a clipboard are standing by either - that'll be the man fom the ministry...

        Nuff said sir Pness !

A deCATT'd ABY produces same results as deCATT'd 3B, but its the age of the car that decides what regulation should be enforced.

        <cough>

Out of interest - what sports CAT are you using and is there any issue with ground clearance ?

          The Milltek jobbie Paul

          This one:

200 cell I think...as for ground clearance, it uses the standard mounting bracket (well, one side of it) and not had any bother with speed bumps yet, though I do tip toe over 'em...

(Then get back in the car and drive very slowly over them, after feeling a bit of a tit for stopping the traffic)

The JP Exhaust place we visited can do any spec exhaust/cat combination you want - I'll be going back there at some point, so will ask the guy to do a proper measure and quote for the sports cat (though my cat has had part of it cut off and a new piece welded on to replace the pointless 1 into 2 into 1 split. Sounds well now though, when you're gunning it, and quiet on the motorway, with no drone. Well chuffed with that now. Has also altered boost characteristics - comes on a lot sooner, but we'll see what it's like after the remap.) Oh, btw, only mention JP cause you don't have to pay what I paid for the damn exhaust Downpipe and Cat, £807.23 from QST, and you also have to run the gauntlet of the nice lady who answers the ... no, I won't go there... *shudder*

I have just had a look and my car had CAT removers fitted by Cheesman Products Ltd in Woking in 1997 and has passed every MOT since no problem!

I will let you know if Jan 2005!!

            Cheers,

            Steve.
