my piston rings are worn badly so im thinking to change the pistons and rings and rods , also ive already done major mods K26/27 turbo, rs2 exhaust manifold, RS2 injectors, RS2 intercooler, K &N intake with cone, s/s exhaust turbo back with no cats, remapped ecu and 3 bar map sensor, wastegate spring, RS2 head gasket.

After the mods I started to get blue smoke out the back which meant the engine is burning oil also its done 150k miles.

I am going to dismantle the engine to get the pistons out, which made me think of bigger oversized pistons or maybe a 2.6 block?

Audi never produced a 5 cylinder 2.6 block, you're better off just fitting oversized pistons,if you can get them that is

          Habib,

what your talking about has been done (although I don't think to 2.6) but at tremendous cost and in my IMHO to little gain APG is right, go with oversize pistons and change the rods for some Carrillos, Pauters or.... Eurospec (I think, Mihnea?).

If you want to read about the trials and tribulations of stroking the I5T search the lists on Kruemmer:

            Mark,

I might be wrong here but i am sure that Dialynx have done some work with a 2.6 conversion, might have been on one of their earlier sport quattros - Keith Murray might be worth a chat to considering what he's managed to extract from an I5 engine. I'm sure there was an article way back in Audi Driver about them dyno'ing an engine with 2.6l capacity.

HTH, You looking for magic 450-500bhp now????

I've heard of something like that as well.
Conversion uses longer stroke crankshaft coming out of the IL5 Diesel 2.5L with around 96 mm stroke (96,5 if I remember correctly), and should at least have specific lenght con-rods.

Just take into account that torque produced in the combustion phase is proportional to the stroke, so going from 86.5 mm to 96.5 mm and leaving all other parameters unchanged, gives 11,5% more torque all through the rpms.

Dialynx did do a stroker conversion, here:

This was however to 2.5 litres for reliability.

Siena @ VAG Sport also does the big CC conversion. I think he uses a diesel block, not sure... I'll have to ask him when I see him this week.

Just for info, he is currently putting an RS4 engine into a S2! yes, you read that right!!! RS4 engine, in an S2! What he doesn't know about Audi's isn't worth knowing!

AFAIK the actual transmission is a straight bolt on job.

when i was doing the rebuild on mine i was offered an RS4 engine at a good price.

Not only would it have cost even more to get it fitted and longer off road but can you imagine the insurance for a 20year old with an RS4 engine in it!!

                      Martyn,

I had a chat with Siena earlier this year, while taking a look over a UR/S2 conversion he'd done. He'd stuck a 2.5 diesel bottom end onto a 3B head and bolted on a kkk26/27
From what he told me, it was relatively straight forward to do and produced lots of bottom end grunt.

He sure knows his stuff....isn't he doing some sort of advanced Audi technical training or sommin like that at the mo?

                      Cheers
                      Steve.

That sounds like a plan alright - what engine code is that 5-pot 2.5l - isn't a VW van of some sort. I'm drawing up plans, notions for a scarey engine and I must admit the draw of 500cc per cylinder has a certain attraction to it. If the 20V head bolts straight on with the right compression ratio then it is indeed easy. Wonder what abuse the rods are up for ?

I think Siena is the one GIVING the course to loads of technicians!!! I've known him for a long time and the man is incredible!! (hope he doesn't read this forum- I'll be embarrassed!) Hmm, RS4 engine in S2 + 20 years old = The national debt of Peru for a premium :-)

Paul, the VW block you're thinking of is the AAB straight five, that was a 2.4. I am pretty sure the block he will use is the AEL TDi block which is the 2.5 A6 engine from 1996 > 1997 which also has a 6 speed box.

I'll ask him about the rods, if he uses TDi ones, or whether he used other ones. He's coming round to play at my house tomorrow night so I'll pick his brains whilst he's fitting the TDi block to my Avant. ;-)

The piston dia is 81mm and for some strange reason..... this engine had different pistons on cyl.s no 1+2 to the three pistons in 3-5?? work that one out?

nothing to do with the extra heat and the inefficiency of the intake path on those two pots is it????? I guess they could be made of more resilient materials maybe?
