Hi all
Just thought my experience with the well know overboost protection gremlin may be of interest to some out there who are also having this problem.
My symptoms were fairly classic. Car would cut fuel supply sometimes if I used WOT in any of the higher gears (especially 5th). Car also did not pull evenly when under hard accel and felt "lumpy".
I did all the usual things like check the codes (none), checked for leaks (some found and fixed), replace the DV etc. All made absolutley no difference.
I then finally found a local crowd that really know their turbo cars (built their own turbo Toyota with a big hybrid KKK giving 235kw from the 4 cyl overhead can Toyota motor
). They also have VAGCOM !! Took the guy there 5 minutes and a spirited drive up the road to diagnose the wastegate as been incorrectly set and was overboosting to the tune of 1.2bar in 1st gear already. Another 30 minutes later and the car is back to factory spec.
I now can really appreciate the S2 performance since the car has never really been right since I got it. The turbo guy suspects somebody had their fingers in the wastegate and ******ed it up.
Anyway, worth a check if you have exhausted all other options. Apparently you can only check this with the VAGCOM unit on the seat next to you as you blast up the road (or use a dyno I guess).
Now, where do I get those home fries again ??
