would anyone have a clue about a ABY smoking only when hot (when fan kicks in). Fine on start up, no gunk in oil cap, no water loss, no noticeable power loss - generally fine. Once cooled to normal temp, no smoke! PCV done but running without Cat. Read somewhere this may affect turbo seals due to lack of back pressure. (new turbo 20k ago, but decatted 6k ago) any ideas.?

I have had this problem over the last few days, if i come home switch it off then start it up 5 mins later it hunts and puffs blue smoke till one blip and all is well again--clean tickover and no smoke. The other week i replaced the water sensors and fitted a new plug housing to the MFTS. To do the job i took out the plastic PCV valve (It leaks slightly internally as i washed it out with carb cleaner and fluid leaked both ways), the copper coil was gunked up to hell so i washed it out (Looks like new now). Once i put it all togther again i started it up to see a bit of fume comming out somewhere out of the engine bay. Would anyone have a clue where it would come from and would it also give me the tick over problem when hot?

blue smoke on start up normally means oil leaking down the steam seals, the blip throttle would help clear the oil out and would cause it to stop as no oil to burn.
browny/black smoke is over fueling normally, maybe bad maf or dirty injectors
and since on smoke colours, white is when water is getting in there, due headgasket failure normally
i thought this was going be some nice pictures and allLast edited by goodall; 23 April 2009, 17:10.Comment

Stem oil seal leaks take quite a while to leak usually, plus if your going down a hill with your foot off the gas then boot it at the bottom you should get a puff, i dont. I can quite literally leave the car 1 minute after a run, start it up and it hunts and smokes continuously till i blip the throttle. This does not happen all the time as well, sometimes it just starts and ticks over as it should with no smoke so it is intermittantEverything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.--:Albert EinsteinComment

An upsate on my Issue....
I have since replaced the braided oil return from the turbo and there is no smoke, something for you guys to look into maybe?Comment

That implies that the problem was a clogged oil return line, not allowing oil supplied under pressure to the turbo bearings to drain properly back to the engine sump. A build up of oil, under pressure, would be forced pass the turbo seals and into the exhaust = smoke.
The cure *might* have been to clean/wash out the return line and reinstall.RS2'd 93 UrS4 5 spd sedan

Might have been yes, But i also had the problem that the pipe was leakingThat implies that the problem was a clogged oil return line, not allowing oil supplied under pressure to the turbo bearings to drain properly back to the engine sump.
