    -5 AN Hardline fittings?

I've been trying to find -5 AN fittings so I can make up some nice new fuel lines when I put my coupe back together and having no luck

I wanted to use -5 AN as 5/16 is near as dammit 8mm which is the OD of the stock fuel lines. Mine were pretty manky and rotten in places, so I have cut the stock lines where they bend up from the floor pan into the engine bay - I can't get at the clips or the rest of the fuel lines to replace the whole lot as the rack etc is in the way

Ideally i wanted to use some Wade compression fittings to connect the stock 8mm lines where i cut them to some nice new 5/16 Cupro Nickel fuel lines down to follow the stock lines, and then use some nice Earls or Aeroquip fittings and braided hose at the fuel filter / tank end to replicate the stock flexi bits and banjos etc.

Can't seem to find -5 AN fittings to use with 5/16 or 8mm hardline anywhere though

I could use -6 fittings at the filter / tank end and some -6 aluminium lines, but then i'm still having a headahce working out how to then connect the -6 lines to the 8mm stock lines at the front of the car.
If sure there must be an easy solution i'm missing - can someone put me straight please?!

    and again

    you sure there's a -5AN fitting?

      On paper:

      In reality I don't know

Seems stupid if there isn't, its a common tube size and it exists in JIC fitment which is very similar.
Maybe I can mix it up with some JIC adapters or something... Its causing me a headache though

        Yep it does...

but nobody seems to stock that size...

Have to spend tomorrow at work...googling...

I'm pretty sure that dash sizes referred to the internal diameter of the pipe....
... -6 sounds a nice ish size though...
...seem to remember using -8 feed and -6 return on sportscars but it later became popular to use -8 both ways.

(Bear in mind the sportscars ran about 750bhp so you're unlikely to need -8)

Confirmed - AN "dash" sizes refer to the bore in 1/16" increments ...that's the historical accurate way

EDIT ...maybe it is OD ....but that does seem a bit alien to me

never heard of a -5AN..... only odd number i have ever seen or heard of was -3AN.

and the 37 degree JIC / AN (Army/Navy) is defined here:

The AN thread is a particular type of fitting used to connect flexible hoses and rigid metal tubing that carry fluid. It is a US military-derived specification stemming from a joint standard agreed upon by the Army and Navy, hence AN. The standard is sometimes mistakenly referred to as "Air Force-Navy", but it dates back to World War Two, before there was a separate US Air Force.

AN sizes range from -2 (dash two) to -32 in irregular steps, with each step equating to the OD (outside diameter) of the tubing in 1/16" increments. Therefore, a -8 AN size would be equal to 1/2" OD tube (8 x 1/16 = 1/2). However, this system does not specify the ID (inside diameter) of the tubing because the tube wall can vary in thickness. Each AN size also uses its own standard thread size.

AN fittings are a flare fitting, using 37° flared tubing to form a metal-metal seal. They are similar to other 37° flared fittings, such as JIC fittings, which is their industrial variant. The two are interchangeable in theory, though this is typically not recommended due to the exacting specifications and demands of the aerospace industry. The differences between them relate to thread class (how tight a fit the threads are) and the metals used.

Note that 37° AN and 45° SAE fittings and tooling are not interchangeable due to the different flaring angles. Mixing them can cause leakage at the flare.

Been looking at hydraulic fittings this morning and can sort this with some JIC fittings which share the same 37deg flare and SAE threads - would need to use a 5/16" tube nut and 8mm or 5/16" tube sleeve, then a 3/8" to 5/16" reducing union, which would then bolt up to -6AN fittings with a 9/16-18 SAE thread. Should tide me over until I pull the engine and rack out in a few months and can replace the hardlines all the way to the engine bay with -6 stuff

PITA that I need to mix and match with AN and JIC, but it'll work fine with the pressures we're talking about in the fuel system
If anyone finds any nice aero fittings in -5 though, please shout!

Alex your best bet will be to call fay at speed flow she will know where you can get -5 from although i have never seen any before??

I do have the earls catougle at home so i can check that.

Yeah I printed the Earls catalogue off at work today but didn't have time to have a look though, I'm sure they exist somewhere.
I'll make a few calls tomorrow and see if i can find anything - not overly bothered at the moment cos I can get some JIC hydraulic bits to make things work, then I can go -6 all the way once the engine and rack is out the way

Silly question time, are these fittings for for the fuel rail connection, or for the tank end?

its to make up some braided flexi sections to join the hard lines at the tank end to replicate the factory set-up - but really it could be anything to do with joining stock size 8mm hardline to the AN type fittings

Well I spoke to Fay, she was very helpful but apparently -5 hasn't been around for many years, wasn't used much appraently so no market for it - apparently you can get it from some obscure plane racing parts suppliers in the US or custom made, but thats something for the Mclarens and Ferraris of this world.
So I'm going to get -6 flexil ines made up for the tank end and use some T316 JIC fittings to connect to the 8mm hardlines for the time being - once the engine and rack come out later in the year, i'll replace the hardlines with -6 all the way to the rail

I really need to get up on this AN / JIC stuff... Man....

Anyway - my lines are somewhat shabby looking and I'm overdue a fuel filter and pump change. No way the old lines will survive the handling for that.

Whats better to use for new hardlines - 8mm copper or alloy/aluminium piping ?

What sort of money is on the aeroquip style -6 AN hoses for the flexible sections at the tank end and do they incorporate some normal looking hose clamp to attach onto existing joints.

I suppose I need to get under the car and size this up properly before I start into it. Any guidance received before that is gladly appreciated though.

If somewhere like speed flow can make up suitable -6AN hoses then it might be cool if they can productise that for easy re-use with an S2 specific part number.
