This may sound a tad silly and I know my way around a Kv engine like the back of my hand but....where is the thermostat on the AAN 20v engine on my 96 S6? Or am I missing a trick. Looks tight wherever it is anyway. The temp gauge always shows cold unless in traffic when she climbs nicely to 90degrees, also the climate never really blows hot so I assume the thermostat may be sticking or jammed? Any ideas folks??
Its on the UK passenger side of engine... See the inlet manifold... There is a water rail below that where a link pipe extends to a housing on the block for the thermostat. On the housing is another pipe that links to the main radiator. It is quite hard to see as there is a lot of gubbins in the way. Your problem does sound like a 'stat that is stuck open.
Its so long since I had the KV engine that I can't remember if its in the same place as AAN - gut feel tells me that it should be - its essentially the same 2226cc block.
Well....bent me fingers at right angles this morning and removed the thermostat cover and prised out the old one. Fitted the new one and..........voila. Needle rose to 90 degrees after a few minutes, the climate blew hot air properly ( and I mean hot air ) for the first time since I had her last November. And, dare I say it, but she seems to be running better, smoother really. The best thing is that I drove from Stoke to Cannock on the M6 this afternoon and averaging 75mph we were running at 31.04mpg. Bloody brilliant considering the size of the car. Thanks everyone for the pointers.
