    Spark plug popping out

    Hey guys!!

At the lights the other day, went to pull off, heard a clunk and the engine sounding like it was running on water.

Ended up being the front spark plug had come out. Screwed it back in and less than 200 miles later it pops back out.

How come its doing this? Is it time for a new set of plugs or is it a bit more serious?

    It's a bit more serious.
The threads in the head can get damaged, have a search for suggestions.

Hi chris, its always best to check the plugs every few months, due to they are prone to loosen, it might have ripped the thread on the head itself, i would probably put a new set of plugs in if that dont work, the head will have to be heli coiled i think there was others who have had this problem

        Hope its not the head!!!

To be honest i've owned the car for 8months ish cover about 6k miles, and havent done anything with the plugs let alone checked them. Plus have no idea if the previous owner had done anything with them.

Was planning on changing them and the filters soon as i have a track day lined up, so hopefully that will sort out the problem.

This has happened a few times before to other users and the cause was always threads stripped, although they can be repaired in car using timeserts instead of taking the head off, but then you can never be sure you have got 100% of the swarf out. Timeserts are brilliant, the only downside is when yopu fix them in place you stretch them to set them, this can in theory damage the head more (Crack), but the people who have used them swear by them.

              Well known problem

Too bad you didn't know about it. AAN, ABY and ADU (and probably 3B) all have problems with spark plugs working their way out of the head. You need to check the plugs regularly (e.g. every month) to make sure this doesn't happen.

Here is a post on testimonials from those who have had the problem:

Here is a thread on why it might happen:

i had that once in which 2 or 3 spark plugs were not properly tightened, OR had become loose. Thing is that ever since then, (have been replaced 3 times) i never had any problems with them, even on rechecks.

does the fact that the factory coils and cap seal the top end tight and therefore allows less movement of the plugs anyway, have anything to do with it?
