James: It might not be the crank sensor:

Here is some crank sensor info (note crank sensor pin):

          http://forums.audiworld.com/showthread.php?p=18839940

In reality, the pin is squarish (as shown at "8 o'clock" in this post):

          http://forums.audiworld.com/showthread.php?t=2746938

The pin has been known to take early retirement and buy a cottage in Cornwall.

If it has gone, it is possible to fab a new one from square stock and, if you or your mechanic are clever, weld it to the flywheel through the starter hole.

              James,

Don't know what it is, but have you double-checked all of the wiring, where you can?

What I'm thinking of, as this problem is going on for you for a long time, is that maybe somewhere there is a frayed cut or damaged wire(s).

              Just a suggestion.

I presume you've pressure tested all of the pipes, vacuum and boost including the intercooler ?

If you ever find the problem before you burn it, please do post the cause of the heartache?

Wishing you maximum luck with it.

Get a drive / lift in someone elses, just to keep your faith in tact.

              Kind regards.
