    Spark Plugs (& amusement)

Decided after some funny running that I'd check the plugs over, the engine was warm and whilst they all required the scratchette to get them undone, they were not tight in the slightest, still, the engine was hot and they were done cold.

I see that 30 Nm is the recommended torque but in the absence of a torque wench I'll have to use my calibrated finger in the air torque hand.

I also found something that amused and then annoyed me... a washer has fallen into no. 5 and I can't get it out, have taken the time out to write the thread and check torque before I lost my rag. It's stuck between the hex and head and whilst I can move it round the hole, I can't get my usually trusty magnet in there, neither can I manage a pincer movement on it whilst holding a torch in my teeth Witness marks on the boot indicate it's been there for a while and I can't see that done any harm but then again, its' not been much help either.

Back to try and try again, my middle name is Robert so I guess there's a spider based lesson here

    a couple of ideas.

bit of tape stuck to a screwy.
    blob of grease.
stronger magnet. heres a tip strip open an old hard drive. take the 2 magnets out of the corner. they will be uber strong.
    telescopic magnetic aerial thingy
strong vac with a reducer over the sparky hole.

Good thread Paul, I need to change my spark plugs too! Try and get the best burn outta my 18 month old fuel... would either old sparkplugs or old fuel cause an emmisions failure btw? I'd have thought unburnt fuel could be an issue on the former, and on the latter would expect knock if it was too bad

Cheers Paul, something in the 45deg region, all felt fine and the calibrated hand detected a constant increase in applied torque so no overtightening

Long screwdriver or socket and chewing gum. Works every time.

(Don't ask me how I know. Well okay then, I had to use this technique to get a bulb OUT of my rear light cluster after it fell in down the bottom! )

Problem was that the waher had fallen sideways on and access was limited due to the spark plug ceramic sticking up over an inch above. All sorted, back together and running again now, with the addition of my special edition Slovenian MAF

I was genuinely pleased with myself and the fact that I didn't lose my rag with it

                    More investigation to be done...
