After zero success with VAG-COM and months of research, I have finally found diag code reader that works with the dreaded Hitachi ECU. Product is the QUICKLYNKS T45E Hand Held Scanner. Costs £34.99 off eBay. You'll need a 2x2 conversion cable (I used my VAG-COM 2x2) or order one with it. Works a treat. Give the car a good run, rev it to over 3k in third gear. Park up leave engine running (Do NOT turn it off). Plug in the QuickLynks and watch the ECU finally confess all its problems. Brill - no more grovelling around with Led's and working out blink codes etc.

Vagcom works fine with the 7A, well the genuine ross-tech version does anyway. That does sound a better option as vagcom is a little overkill for the 7A being limited by low connection speed and a single measuring block. Thats also a lot cheaper.....91CQ20v - Gone to a new home

Can't use VAGcom on the early 7As
Never found the blink codes a problem to be honest, I've set mine up with an LED in the blank slot in the instrument housing for the Air Bag, then with a push switch under the drivers glove tray to bridge the connectors so I can read the codes without needing to mess about under the dash

It puts the ECU into a default mode with pre-defined settings, disables O2 sensor control, sets static ignition timing and does a few other things for the purpose of setting up the base idle speed etc. I get the impression Paul knows something we dont in relation to the fault codes diag circuit
