Audi Tuners in London - around that area (7A Engine)

Hi folks - first of all hello, great forum!

I currently own a VW T25 with an Audi 2.3 20V 5 Cylinder engine fitted and it's running a little rough - basically I would like to take it to an Audi Specialists to get it looked over, as i'm still fairly unfamiliar with it myself (although reading the threads on here has helped a great deal so far!) I'll stick some pics of it up in the members car section soon so you can get an idea of what it's like. We bought the van after the previous owner had fitted the engine, and while it worked fine and ran pretty well, there was some shady workmanship so we've been working through and correcting the 'bodges'. Now we've owned it a year and driven it across France for last years holiday so it's been fine in that sense, just seems quite thristy, and the idle is pretty terrible, and it cuts out when you slow down to a stop at lights etc. This is obviously annoying and dangerous so need to get it sorted! Just trying to find out if there's any good Audi places that would be willing to have a look over the engine and see if they can assess it's 'state of health' if you like - i'm based in Aylesbury Buckinghamshire. Any help/advice much appreciated, thanks,
    Lewis

Oh, also, I have been reading about throttle bodies on the other threads, and understand the importance of inlet length (I have another car running a race engine so know about throttle bodies) and in the bay I would have loads of room to run a nice long inlet, can you buy kits for these engines at all or would it have to be a diy affair>?! (This is just something I was thinking of in the long run, I obviously need to sort the running issues first!)

PS: Here are a few shots of it for your perusal:

    Here's the bay:

We bought the proper South African bell housing to fit the engine to the VW gearbox (to replace the previous bodge) a friend then fitted it all for us (genius) so that was one of the big issues sorted:

    After:

And here's how it looks overall:

Oh, and yes it's fast when it's running well!

Welcome to the forum, sounds like you have the normal idle problems of these engines. Before doing anything i would buy a can of carb cleaner and a tooth brush and get the throttle body / Idle valve as clean as you can and see how it runs.

I'm not a fan of cone filters and found these engines go better with the stock airbox, having said that yours must sound fantastic with the air filter inside the van

Hi, thanks Yea i've managed to work out where the ICV is so i'll get that off at the weekend and give it a clean. Also seemed to have developed a bit of a misfire under acceleration - normally it goes like stink when you accelerate, but I had noticed that it was lacking power under load, so that's something else I was concerned with. Yes it sounds like a beast, and I did want to quieten it down but the way the engine sits in the bay it's hard to accomodate the standard air box! That's why I had thought of throttle bodies - then I could get a nice airbox in there.

I am also in aylesbury and know a bit about the 7a engine if you need any info, normally seen tooling around in either a pearl white quattro saloon or titan gray avant.

Mine went brilliantly with my cone filter on absolute rocket.

The ignition on the 7A still uses an old school distributer so i'd start checking out rotor/cap/and leads in search of miss fires. The only real weak point with these engines is the fuel injectors, there complete junk! There usually past it by 100,000miles and when they go they leak fuel all the time so it will idle like crap, bog down, and just run rubbish. The most common fix is to replace them with a more modern set of Bosch injectors but you're looking at ~$300. I went for the cheap option and bought another set and have them all tested to pick out the best five, they have served me well for the past three years.

Cone filters are ridiculously loud on these engine, i had one in my coupe that used to scare the life out of pedestrians, all you have to do is cruise up behind them and floor it Throttle bodys would be amazing but it's a DIY project, i believe it has been done by a few guys on audifans.net

            Mark.

Pull the diagnostic codes (I assume you are still on the Hitachi ECU). I always check the knock sensors and temp sender first as both my 7A's sent me on wild goose chases with misfires and power loss issues. Check correct OE spark plugs fitted as the Bosche 4 pin plugs fitted to mine lost the plot whenever the engine got hot. Distributor drive is another good call, but you can usually hear it rattling on the overrun.

Check out www.20v.org for the all the quirks of the 7A engine and some useful tips.

thanks for the assistance so far guys - given me something to start with anyways!

Acidburn, that would be cool to maybe meet up and have a loook at some point to see what you reckon.

Right ended up with an ever bigger problem today - cleaned out the ICV and then refitted it. Started the van and it was particularly tappetty (like real noisey tappets) so I killed the ignition for a while, then tried to restart it and nothing. It's turning over but it will not fire. Put in some more fresh fuel and tried again after giving it a while to rest in case it was flooded and still nothing - any ideas? I am gutted!

Ignition maladjusted? It won't start if the ignition hall sensor isn't right on target. When it fires the ignition should be possible to adjust to 0 degrees using VAG COM.

The folks here can be very helpful http://www.20v-sauger-tuning.de/

Thanks dude i'll have a look there also. I thought it could be the distributor, either that or the ignition like you said. Thing is it was running before but it had this slight misfire like I said, and the idle was erratic/non existent. Could it be the cam timing is out also? I had noticed this tappety sound ages ago too but it went away after a mile or so of driving. It was very distinct like the tappets needed adjusting or something, now it just won't start. Fuel pump is priming, spark plugs all look ok - can't think how the cam timing would be out if it was running before?

Shame i'm not around today, next time i'm around is next week as I could check all the timing marks for you. Easiest way to find out if the dizzy gears given up the ghost is take the cap off and crank the engine see if the rotor arm is turning.

                        timing marks:

If you still are stuck next fri-sun when i'm back in aylesbury send me a pm i'll pop round and give you a hand. Hope you can see most of them markings on you'res just depends how much space you have around the engine.

                          Hi Acidburn,

That would be really appreciated if you could pop by next week and have a look, as i had a check over it again the weekend but not too sure what i'm looking at (with the exception of the top marking). I'll drop you a pm dude,
                          thanks
