    Final Niggles and some 'times'

Well after getting the old beast at least running without limp mode have now put a few hundred miles on the old girl. Still have an issue with the turbo as it whistles and whines noisily but only on full boost, going for boost leak test soon to confirm its the turbo and still very occasional smoke so will probably have to send away yet again at some point. Does anyone else with a K24 and chipped and find it whistles/whines?

Certainly seems to run OK though and quick enough for me (at the moment). My Cq has the 6 speed and it achieved the following times, how does this compare to others with this conversion, better/worse/same?:
    70 to 90mph in 6th - 5.1 secs
    50 to 70mph in 5th - 3.6secs
    50 to 70mph in 4th - 3.0 secs

Managed to upset a Vauxhall Astra VXR Saturday too. Came along side thinking he'd easy get past this old Audi. Had Lynn in the car so told her to put her head on the headrest to avoid the whiplash and to be fair they seem pretty quick (quicker than I expected) as was only 1/2 car length ahead by the time I selected 2nd, not quite 2 car lengths by 60, but due to my short gearing I was 3 car lengths ahead and pulling away by 100. He then pulled in behind me and flashed his lights...So slowed down again. As to Lynn she said I was never to do that again with her in the car as her internal organs were aching from the experience...
Should be interesting to see what difference the uprated exhaust makes in July...

Turbo on mine whistles away, it's worse if you're running a cone filter or free flowing airbox. Why is yours shorter geared with the 6 speed? Have you swapped the front diff to match the rear such that it's a lower final drive? 30-60 time would be good or some 0-60. Should be seriously fast when you learn the best launch tactics. In an S2 it's 4k5, bring the clutch up fast and floor it

By my calculations due to the fact I am running 205 50 15 wheels the max speed in each gear is a bit lower than on a normal S2 ABY with mph/1000rpm in each gear as below and ties in with speedo reading.
      1st 4.6mph/1000rpm
      2nd 8.5mph/1000rpm
      3rd 12.2mph/1000rpm
      4th 15.7mph/1000rpm
      5th 19mph/1000rpm
      6th 23mph/1000rpm

      30-70 in 3rd takes 4.9 secs

To get to 63mph in 2nd I'd have to get the engine up to 7400rpm with my wheel tyre combo. 60 achievable if I was willing to go over 7000rpm (which I'm not), could get quicker time by changing up at 55mph...especially as this 7A exhaust restricts power after around 5300rpm. Freeflow stainless getting fitted in July. Might perform better at higher revs then..
30-50mph in second presently takes between 1.7 and 1.8 secs before exhaust restricts progress. At least I assume its the exhaust, not sure it will make much difference from previous experience with larger bore exhausts. Been told there is little point in taking these standard engines over 6000rpm anyway and better to change up...

Red line is 7400 ish. I use that all the time

Stock engine produces max power at 6k, runs out of puff at 7k with a nice exhaust. In 1st and 2nd use all the revs, 3rd onwards change at about 6k5 IMO/IME.

Well eventually got round to getting the boost leak test done and good news and bad news. Good news was no leaks and Tim stating the engine was in excellent condition. Bad news the 2nd refurbed turbo is useless. Under pressure from the boost leak tester you could hear the oil being pushed through to the hot exhaust and sizzling. On driving home I had a 007 smoke cloud for the first 2 miles until it had burnt off, so decent turbo now needed as not bothering to get this one done a 3rd time.

Hmm I wonder if your turbo issues are the same as mine, I had mine rebuilt and have a loud whistle, sounds like a cracked maifold or something, but its not and I get smoke occasionally from the exhaust. Might have to have mine checked out aswell.
It's not too much trouble as it's off the road anyways for new CV joints. I have heard the whistle can be from a cracked housing have to have a good inspection.

ITS Turbos. Know plenty who have had good work done by them which is why I used this company, so unless there is some issue with my particular turbo, not sure why they cannot get it right, said they fitted uprated bearing the last time but not helped.
Is there any other turbo that is better than the K24 that fits the same manifold and can still use paul's homefry?

New turbo = new chips at a minimum, new injectors, EM, map sensor etc. etc. etc. etc. more likely.

TD and AET might be worth a try or just get a secondhand one for £50-£100 and bang it on, get a spare for the same money too
