Fan cuts in = 'electrical' noise and power blip

    Hi,

Took the car out again today after fiddling with the brake guards. Good news - it sorted the squealing noise

However, just before the fan kicked in there was a slight "electrical" noise from under the dash, and a blip in power - dash lights went off for a split second and the car almost died, fan kicked in and it was all good. I waited for it to kick in again and the same happened... not seen this before, has anyone had similar? Could there be a dodgy relay or something?

    Cheers

err yup would get that addressed asap as the current draw to kick start the fan is massive and if you have a short or similar could melt the harness like mine did....

Any pointers as to what relay i should check / replace? I'm paranoid about it being a problem and would rather replace it to be sure... in the mean time I'll dig out the schematics on s2central.net and try to figure it out!

Only "change" i've made over there, is to refit the under-dash cover thingy; there were a few dangly wires so hopefuly nothing got broken! Damn Q********s for pulling it open in the first place

check the fuses for any signs of melting and i think there was a thread by AlistairC on the same issue. On mine it was shorting somewhere near the fan from memory and landed me with a £500 bill

Sounds like Relay 324 is on it's way out that is exactly what my RS2 did and now the fan is on all the time

                cheers

relay 324 is for speed 1 only. So it's afterrun only or for air con cars where the fan will always run at speed 1 when the temperature is above 5 degrees.

It sounds to me like the fan motor is drawing excessive current when speed 2 is engaged.

It will likely be the motor itself, wiring or resistor pack

The 500W fans used on the RS2 and S2 pull around 50-60 amps on startup and then settle between 35-40 amps while running.

I would tend to lean towards the fan being the problem as the motor is requiring more amperage to start.

Not sure if the S2s have a fuseable link like the 200q20v (3bs)...I believe the fan is the same...
