Swapping timing pin on ally flywheel?

    Hi folks,

Last weekend I tried fitting my ally flywheel only to find the engine wouldn't start with it fitted. I can only assume this was the flywheel as nothing else was touched on the engine, only the gearbox was removed from underneath. The moment we refitted the original flywheel all worked fine again. And before you say so yes, I realised I should've pulled codes but at 2 in the morning I didn't feel like messing around with blinky LEDs to find out what I already know

So I'm pretty sure the timing pin on the ally flywheel is too small, being half the length of the one on the OEM flywheel. Has anybody else had a similiar problem with the Fidanza flywheel? And how the hell do you get the pins out?!?

    Cheers.

I would suggest that a little heat will help remove it but be very careful, unless you can press it oput from the reverse if they've put a nice thro' hole in there.

Take the 2 sensors off the 'box casing and see how far the pin needs to protrude to trigger the sensors.

As said ..first make sure it is magnetic for the sensor to pick up...Taking the pins out are a b"tch...drill from the back and hammer it out

The pin that's in there now barely protrudes past the 3 huge bolts which hold the outer steel starter gear to the wheel, so I'm guessing the timing reference sender is picking up an extra 3 signals which are about the same strength as the pin itself.... not a great design! Hopefully putting a much longer pin made of better material will solve the problem.

Bit worried about heat because it's aluminium, don't want to buckle the whole thing. Drilling sounds like a better alternative but how much will that mess with the balance? Suppose I could do the same on the other side...

        Cheers for the tip.

I drilled my 3B cast fly wheel as i snapped the pin in. It was just a 1.5mm hole and then just pushed the old pin out. Blancing will be fine as i take it the engine has not been balanced together with the fly wheel any way?

@Andy the mounting bracket for the engine speed sensor and fly wheel pick up sensor are bolted to the block and not the gear box fyi.

Also removing material from the flywheel to push the pin out will probably go some way to balancing oput the extra weight of the longer pin you would be fitting.

Nope engine is not balanced with fly which is another concern but i'll get to that at a later date

Anybody got a figure of where on the flywheel the timing pin should be, as in "degrees of rotation" position, as I don't have a spare flywheel to compare and thought this might be worth checking too. Also probably worth checking the bolt hole pattern to make sure the hole that's slightly offset is in the correct position too, if that makes sense?!?

Gotcha... There's a cutout in the bell housing so you can see the pin move past the hole if you rotate the engine by hand.

No worries, 7As are cheap enough Fit an ally front pulley whilst you're there, that should speed up the self-destrucion

Best to compare flywheels really, the bolt pattern is quite subtle IIRC.

I am not sure if the 5 speed box as the same viewing holes as the 6 speed casting. It sure looks like there is more on the 6 speed to me.
