Disappointment after cambelt and boost pipe change

Yesterday I had my Roose Motorsport boost intake pipes and the cambelt (plus associated parts) changed. The mechanic is exVAG and has always done a good job.
The problem I have is the car is only going about 75% of what it was when I dropped it off.

    Things I have noticed are:

    - Its idling 100rpm lower (but idling smooth)

    - Its coming on boost later but doesnt seem to be coming on as hard. The car has been Superchipped (before I purchased it) It used to come on boost at around 3,100rpm, now its coming on at 4,100rpm.

Its very disappointing Any idea what could be wrong? Boost leak? Timing out?

    Any advice would be greatful.

Has he refitted the belt one tooth out of postion

I know when the cambelt is changed a lot of pipework is removed to get access to the belt... what boost levels are you getting?

Timing should be OFF by one tooth on the RS2 - very tedious, but most mechanics will not know this.

Also - those chips are dreadful... REALLY not good - little more than a cludge.

This might seen stupid but if the cambelt is to be off one tooth is it written like that in the factory RS2 training manual (I gave the Mechanic a copy). Another silly question (maybe), which way should the timing be off?

Re the Superchip, yes I know . . . . I plan to change that in the future. Be down under doesnt help matters though

No it is not in the manual but it is a known issue to Audi specialists, the cam pulley needs to be half a tooth behind the cover or you'll get no boost.

            Very common issue http://www.s2forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=21353

Forum is littered with threads about it

To summarise... there are three locations to check alignment is true.

1 - crank timing mark on flywheel
2 - crank timing mark on pulley
              3 - camshaft pulley

1 & 2 are of course inseparable - sometimes its easier just to see one better than the other.

For #3 - this aligns with a mark on the head when 1&2 are aligned EXCEPT on RS2 when cam pulley should be ~1 tooth to the left of the head mark. This anomolie is not declared in any manuals that I have - but its a very common problem.

it looks a narrower arrow on the rocker cover than the aby. is it just the photo illusion?

if its slightly narrower then that how i got my 7a timed also. worked much better than in the centre.

Another common problem is a broken key on the crank sproket caused by mechanics using an "air-gun" to tighten pulley bolt instead of using a torque wrench (very high setting. see manual)
This happend to me and gave the same running faults you seem to have.
Best get it check ASAP as this can cause the crank to spin on the front sproket with terminal engine damage!!
I allways have the crank sprocket changed with every cambelt now.
I'm sure there are several other people on here have had the same problem!

Very good point there actually... Ask the mech how he torqued it up - and locked the crank along the way !

Also can crack the key on the cam pulley if not locked properly when torqueing.

Car is booked in on Monday to be looked at.
When I spoke to the Mechanic yesterday he said he marked everything when he was working on the car.

Ask how he locked and torqued it... don't ask if he used an air wrench in case he smells you are onto something.

The timing marks will all line-up corectly If the key has broken on the crank sprocket. So just taking the covers off to check will not prove anything.
You need to makesure the engine is actually at TDC either by using the flywheel markings or a dial gauge on no.1 piston through the spark plug hole, then see if they line-up.

Just an update, the car sorted itself out over the following two days. Strange but true, maybe it was something to do with sensors being removed and replaced?
