    Mobil 1 vs. Castrol RS

A question for the oil buffs...
The oil of choice here seems to be the Castrol RS 10/60, which has a big temperature range, and is apparently very gloopy so maintains high oil pressures.

However, has anyone tried, or got information on, the Mobil 1 15/50 which you can get on the shelf (with something called "SuperSyn")?

What was/is the supposed standard oil spec for the S2? I've been running the Synta Gold fully synthetic stuff you get from GSF, but at the recent track day I was seeing rather low pressures/high temps with that oil, so I want to change.

Synta Gold 5W/40 is what Audi recommend but its too damn thin as it doesn't generate enough pressure at high temps for my liking. The same goes for any synthetic 0W/xx or 5W/xx oil in my opinion - which is why Mobil1 is frowned upon in my books. The 15W/50 variant would be better than the normal Mobil1 offering cos of the higher viscosity at high temps but its arguably too thick when hot and not thick enough at cold temps in comparison to 10W/60. Just my opinion - I have never used either oil in mine - its had a 100% diet of Synta gold which is about to stop at the 120k mile service. I love my wee turbo too much

Castrol 10W/60 appears to be 'the dogs' as it provides protection at both extremes of heat. It's what I'll use on the next change.

I changed to RS10/60 3 months ago from Synta Gold.

Since then my car has not 'leaked' or burnt any oil. On synta i used to top up approx 1litre every 3 months/2500miles.

I guess some may argue that a little oil being used is good but I feel happier on teh castrol. I think the synta found a weeping point from my oil cooler too easily.

Thickness? Well this is why I mentioned this 15/50 as an alternative to the Castrol 10/60 - I worry that the Castrol stuff might be TOO thick, and not fast-flowing enough? Sure it keeps the oil pressure up, but if it's not fast flowing enough to lubricate the fast-spinning bearings in, say, your turbo, that's not too good?

I agree thought that I think the Synta Gold standard stuff isn't up to the task if you're driving hard.

I used to use Synta gold, but it was changed every 5-6 minutes. Generally I'd change it if it looked mucky (ok, every 4k miles, tops, then, same as plugs blah blah).

The Magnatec that's in it now seems to be a bit thin (oil pressure down to 1.4-1.5 bar sometimes when idling and hot? Generally 1.8 bar tho at idle). It's been in around 1000 miles, so it's probably time to change now. Think I'll try this RS stuff too.

Don't know what Leigh (Dr H) runs in his. Tate & Lyle golden syrup I think - when it's idling it's showing about 3 bar?

Cheeky fooker - drops to 2.5 bar if it get hot(ish) seems to run 3 bar sometimes though but not very often.

I have compared the big RS to other fine oils in my VW beetle, typ 85 CQ, 2,8V6 CQ and now the S2. The service filled the S2 with Mobile 1 10W-50. With the RS 10W-60 the beetle consumed much less oil, the 2,8 consumed no oil and pressure at iddle was some 0,5 bar higher and now the S2, that consumes no oil with any oil, shows also some 0,5-0,7 bar more. I don't think the RS has any drawbacks with these engines.
